CSUSM Closes Out 2021 Home Schedule This Week

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The RV/NR Cal State San Marcos women’s basketball team (3-1, 1-0 CCAA) will play its final home games of 2021 this week, hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills (1-4, 0-1 CCAA) on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Cal State East Bay (5-1, 1-0 CCAA) on Saturday at 1 p.m. in The Sports Center. 

On Saturday, the CSUSM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will hold a toy drive benefiting the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos. All fans in attendance who bring one new, unwrapped and still-in-the-box toy will receive free admission.

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars opened their CCAA campaign with a 95-75 win over Cal State LA on Saturday afternoon
  • Five Cougars reached double digits in scoring for the first time this season.
  • Vasquez notched her second double-double of the season, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
  • CSUSM led for all but 42 seconds of the game, shooting a season-high 59.4% (38-of-64) from the field.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • In the third week of the D2SIDA West Region Poll, CSUSM stayed steady in the fifth spot and is the top CCAA school in the poll.
  • CSUSM continues to receive votes in the WBCA Top 25 Coaches Poll and remains out of the D2SIDA Top 25 Media Poll.
  • With 96 steals in her CSUSM career, Akayla Hackson is one away from tying former Cougar Cassie Damyanovich (2011-15) for third all-time.
  • Hackson is fifth all-time for career made free throws at CSUSM with 171. She's just 13 away from Savannah Camp's 183 (2015-18) and 16 away from former teammate Stephanie Custodio (2017-19)
  • The Cougars’ 1.37 assist-turnover ratio ranks fourth in Division II. 
  • With four games under their belts, the Cougars rank seventh in the nation in turnovers per game (11.5) and 10th in fewest turnovers (46). 
  • CSUSM leads the CCAA and ranks 27th in Division II in scoring offense, averaging 78.5 per game. 
  • Vasquez ranks second in the nation in field-goal percentage at 69.4%. 
  • Shooting 63.6% from beyond the arc, Kelsey Forrester ranks second in Division II.

THURSDAY AGAINST THE TOROS

  • CSUDH went 0-2 in its opening weekend, falling to Concordia University Irvine (69-66) and Biola (72-69) in the CCAA/PacWest Crossover at Cal State LA.
  • After dropping a 76-69 decision in their home opener to Point Loma, the Toros collected a 91-61 victory over unaffiliated Lincoln University out of Oakland.
  • In their first weekend of CCAA action, the Toros dropped a 82-81 heartbreaker at Cal State East Bay on Saturday.
  • Asia Jordan leads the Toros in points (15.6) and rebounds (8.8) per game.
  • Teammate Auren Isaacson is right behind her with a 14.8 points per game average.
  • In 2019-20, CSUDH finished 12-16 overall and 13-15 in CCAA action. The Toros narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 2020 CCAA Tournament, finishing one game behind eighth-seed Sonoma State alongside CSULA.
  • The Toros were picked to finish seventh in the 2021-22 CCAA Preseason Women's Basketball Coaches Poll.
  • After winning the inaugural meeting between the two teams, the Cougars lost eight consecutive games to the Toros before turning things around and are on a three-game win streak.
  • In their lone meeting in 2019-20, the Cougars recorded a 74-55 victory over CSUDH in The Sports Center.

SATURDAY VERSUS EAST BAY

  • Prior to playing CSUSM on Saturday, the Pioneers will face Cal State LA. on Thursday. 
  • East Bay is off to a hot start this season, tallying five wins and falling only once to Central Washington (68-55). 
  • The Pioneers are ranked right behind CSUSM in the D2SIDA West Region Poll in sixth place. 
  • CSUEB snagged an 82-81 win over the Toros in its conference and home opener. 
  • East Bay is leading the CCAA in scoring defense, holding its opponents to 57.3 points per game. 
  • Madison Schiller ranks ninth in the CCAA with 14.7 points per game average. 
  • East Bay has a slight edge over the Cougars in the all-time series at 6-5, but CSUSM has won four of its last five meetings against the Pioneers. 
  • The two teams last met in the 2020 CCAA Tournament Semifinals where the Cougars walked away with a 77-69 victory. 
  • The Pioneers were picked to finish third in the 2021-22 CCAA Preseason Women's Basketball Coaches Poll.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After sitting out the 2020-21 season, CSUSM returns seven student-athletes from the 2019-20 season in Akayla Hackson, Dynnah Buckner, Kelsey Forrester, Kayden Korst, Natalie Nicolosi, Samantha Custodio and Dominique Hernandez. 
  • Nine Cougars will be hitting the court in Cougar blue for the first time, including Division-I transfers Sydney Buckley (Winthrop), Bria Dixson (Univ. of Montana) and Shasta Parker (Univ. of Portland) as well as Division-II transfer Katie FitzGerald (Cal State Monterey Bay) and junior-college transfer Kate Carlson (N.D. State College of Science). 
  • Joining the team in 2020-21, redshirt freshmen Natalie Langford and Maitland Kingsley will finally get the opportunity to suit up for CSUSM this season while true freshman Deannah Buckner joined the roster this season.
  • As the reigning CCAA Regular Season Co-Champions, CSUSM was picked to repeat in the 2021-22 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE JIMENEZ FILE

  • Head coach Renee Jimenez enters her seventh season in charge of the Cougar women's basketball team, a program that is only in its tenth season of existence.
  • In 2019-20, Jimenez earned her second career CCAA Coach of the Year honor after previously earning the award as the head coach at Cal State Monterey Bay during the 2010-11 season. 
  • With Jimenez at the helm, the Cougars set many program records in 2019-20, including most wins (25) and the school's first regular-season conference title. 
  • CSUSM was poised to make its first West Regional appearance in 2019-20 before the season was ultimately cut short due to COVID-19. 
  • The Cougars have advanced to the CCAA Tournament twice, making it to the semifinals in 2018-19 followed by a finals appearance in 2019-20.
  • Jimenez has compiled a 199-135 (.596) in her 12 seasons coaching in the CCAA, spending two seasons at Cal State San Bernardino after a five-year stint at Cal State Monterey Bay.
