RV/NR CSUSM Hosts CSULA in Conference Opener

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The RV/NR Cal State San Marcos women’s basketball team (2-1) will begin its CCAA schedule this Saturday when the Cougars host Cal State LA (0-3) at 1 p.m. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars went 2-1 in their first week of the 2021-22 season. 
  • CSUSM opened the season with a strong 75-62 win at Point Loma on Tuesday. 
  • On the first day of the CSUSM Hoops Classic, the Cougars took care of business against Seattle Pacific with a 71-50 victory on Friday. 
  • CSUSM fell to RV/RV Western Washington in the CSUSM Hoops Classic finale Saturday night. 
  • Kelsey Forrester and Akayla Hackson were named to the CSUSM Hoops Classic All-Tournament Team. 
  • Jordan Vasquez was named CCAA Player of the Week (see below). 

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • In the second week of the D2SIDA West Region Poll, CSUSM moved down to the fifth spot.
  • CSUSM received votes in the WBCA Top 25 Coaches Poll, but dropped out of the D2SIDA Top 25 Media Poll.
  • With 95 steals in her CSUSM career, Akayla Hackson is two away from tying former Cougar Cassie Damyanovich for third all-time.
  • Hackson is fifth all-time for career made free throws at CSUSM with 170 after going 6-of-6 this past week. She's just 13 away from Savannah Camp's 183 (2015-18) and 16 away from former teammate Stephanie Custodio (2017-19)
  • The Cougars’ 1.23 assist-turnover ratio ranks 21st in Division II while their turnovers per game rank eighth (11.7).
  • CSUSM leads the CCAA in scoring offense, averaging 73.0 per game. 
  • Vasquez leads the CCAA and ranks 14th in field-goal percentage at 69.2%. 
  • Shooting 70.6% from beyond the arc, Kelsey Forrester leads the CCAA and ranks eighth nationally. 
  • Averaging five offensive boards per game, Vasquez ranks second in the conference and 17th in Division II.

CONFERENCE OPENER AGAINST THE GOLDEN EAGLES

  • CSULA opened the season with an 0-2 record when the Golden Eagles hosted the CCAA/PacWest Crossover, falling to Biola (74-81) and Concordia Irvine (56-63).
  • The Golden Eagles dropped a 58-63 decision at then-No. 5/7 Azusa Pacific last Tuesday.
  • After taking the weekend off, the Golden Eagles compete at Biola tonight at 5 p.m. before facing the Cougars on Saturday.
  • Only eight Golden Eagles have seen the court so far this season.
  • Lily Buggs is averaging a team-high 19.3 points per game and is second on the squad in rebounds per game (10.3).
  • Jada Johnson is CSULA's top rebounder with a 14.3 average in her first three games of the season.
  • In 2019-20, CSULA finished 12-16 overall and 10-12 in CCAA action. The Golden Eagles narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 2020 CCAA Tournament, finishing one game behind eighth-seed Sonoma State.
  • The Golden Eagles were picked to finish fourth in the 2021-22 CCAA Preseason Women's Basketball Coaches Poll.
  • CSUSM holds a 6-5 lead in the all-time series against the Golden Eagles and are 4-1 when playing in The Sports Center.
  • The Cougars are on a five-game win streak against CSULA with their last meeting concluding with a 75-66 CSUSM win in The Sports Center.

VASQUEZ EARNS CCAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK

  • Jordan Vasquez collected her first CCAA Player of the Week honor this week.
  • She averaged 17 points and 8.7 rebounds per game last week.
  • For the week, Vasquez shot 69.2% (18-of-26) from the field while tallying 51 points, 26 rebounds (15 offensive), two blocks, three steals and four assists.
  • In CSUSM's season opener at PLNU, Vasquez turned in her first double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds in the team's victory last Tuesday. She was 7-of-8 from the field with five free throws for 19 points and recorded two assists. 
  • During the CSUSM Hoops Classic, the 6-foot forward from Moreno Valley netted 17 points with eight rebounds to lead the Cougars to a 21-point win over Seattle Pacific. She also had two blocked shots, two steals and an assist against the Falcons.
  • Saturday afternoon against WWU, Vasquez scored 15 points with eight rebounds plus an assist and a steal.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After sitting out the 2020-21 season, CSUSM returns seven student-athletes from the 2019-20 season in Akayla Hackson, Dynnah Buckner, Kelsey Forrester, Kayden Korst, Natalie Nicolosi, Samantha Custodio and Dominique Hernandez. 
  • Nine Cougars will be hitting the court in Cougar blue for the first time, including Division-I transfers Sydney Buckley (Winthrop), Bria Dixson (Univ. of Montana) and Shasta Parker (Univ. of Portland) as well as Division-II transfer Katie FitzGerald (Cal State Monterey Bay) and junior-college transfer Kate Carlson (N.D. State College of Science). 
  • Joining the team in 2020-21, redshirt freshmen Natalie Langford and Maitland Kingsley will finally get the opportunity to suit up for CSUSM this season while true freshman Deannah Buckner joined the roster this season.
  • As the reigning CCAA Regular Season Co-Champions, CSUSM was picked to repeat in the 2021-22 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE JIMENEZ FILE

  • Head coach Renee Jimenez enters her seventh season in charge of the Cougar women's basketball team, a program that is only in its tenth season of existence.
  • In 2019-20, Jimenez earned her second career CCAA Coach of the Year honor after previously earning the award as the head coach at Cal State Monterey Bay during the 2010-11 season. 
  • With Jimenez at the helm, the Cougars set many program records in 2019-20, including most wins (25) and the school's first regular-season conference title. 
  • CSUSM was poised to make its first West Regional appearance in 2019-20 before the season was ultimately cut short due to COVID-19. 
  • The Cougars have advanced to the CCAA Tournament twice, making it to the semifinals in 2018-19 followed by a finals appearance in 2019-20.
  • Jimenez has compiled a 198-135 (.595) in her 12 seasons coaching in the CCAA, spending two seasons at Cal State San Bernardino after a five-year stint at Cal State Monterey Bay.
