CSUSM Closes Out Homestand with Humboldt State, Sonoma State

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team will wrap up its four-match homestand this weekend, taking on Humboldt State on Thursday at 7 p.m. before facing Sonoma State on Saturday at 1 p.m. 

LAST WEEKEND

  • The Cougars (6-6, 3-3 CCAA) went 1-1 last weekend, recording a four-set victory over Chico State on Friday before falling in a five-set heartbreaker to Stanislaus State on Saturday. 
  • CSUSM tallied a season-high 15 total blocks with five solo blocks against Chico State. Kassy Doering and Kiora Ridgeway collected eight blocks each. 
  • With her 21 digs against Chico State, Grecia Cordero-Barr became CSUSM's all-time career digs leader on Saturday night, raising her total to 1,427 and passing Taylor DeGraaf's previous record of 1,413.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Cougars are 22nd in the nation and dropped to second in the conference in assists per set at 12.67.
  • Madison Turner is second in the CCAA with 10.72 assists per set average, ranking her 18th in the nation.
  • CSUSM ranks third in the CCAA in digs per set at 15.44.
  • CSUSM ranks fourth in the conference in kills per set at 13.47. 
  • Kassy Doering moved up one spot to fourth in the CCAA with a .370 hitting percentage.
  • On Friday, CSUSM's 15 total blocks against Chico State was the most by a CCAA school this season in four sets or less. Sonoma State tallied 15 against Cal State Dominguez Hills in a five-set match. 
  • CSUSM's 52 kills against Fresno Pacific on Sept. 10 rank the highest among CCAA teams in a three-set match this season.
  • Doering's .813 hitting percentage (13k, 0e, 16ta) against Dominican on Sept. 4 is the highest by a CCAA student-athlete this season.

THURSDAY AGAINST HUMBOLDT STATE

  • The Cougars will continue their four-match home series on Thursday, welcoming the Humboldt State Lumberjacks to The Sports Center.
  • CSUSM holds a 4-2 lead in the all-time series against Humboldt State and is 2-1 when playing the Jacks at home.
  • The Cougars have won their last four matches against HSU with the first three contests being sweeps while the 2019 victory finished as a five-set thriller in Arcata. 
  • The Jacks were rewarded a forfeit by Cal State Monterey Bay due to COVID protocols. Per CCAA regulations, the contest will be counted as a win for HSU in the league standings but will not affect its overall record. 
  • Against four common opponents, the Jacks are 1-4 with two losses to Chico State and sweeps by Stanislaus State and San Francisco State. CSUSM and HSU were both victorious against the PacWest Conference's Dominican. 
  • Chico State did not play any matches in 2020 and finished 2019 with a 5-20 overall record and 1-17 record in CCAA action. After defeating CSUMB in their CCAA opener, the Jacks lost 17 consecutive matches. 
  • The Jacks rank second to last in the CCAA in kills per set (11.67) while allowing their opponents to tally a conference-best 12.70 average.
  • HSU's libero Carla Crespo is averaging a CCAA-high 4.73 digs per set and ranks 69th in Division II.
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, Humboldt State was picked to finish last. 

 

CLOSING OUT THE WEEKEND VS. SONOMA STATE

  • CSUSM is 2-1 when facing Sonoma State at home.
  • In the all-time series, the Cougars hold a 3-2 lead over the Seawolves. 
  • After being swept in the first two meetings, CSUSM has racked up wins in the last three matchups. 
  • In the last matchup between the two teams, the Cougars swept the Seawolves by scores of 25-13, 25-15 and 25-10 in 2018 in The Sports Center. 
  • In 2019, the SSU-CSUSM match was cancelled due to power outages from the treat of wildfires in Northern California. 
  • SSU enters its match against Cal State East Bay on Thursday with a 6-7 overall record and is 4-2 in CCAA action. 
  • The Seawolves opened conference action on Sept. 17 with a five-set win at Cal State Dominguez Hills before being swept by Cal State LA the next day.
  • After recording back-to-back sweeps over Chico State and Stanislaus State, the Seawolves fell in five sets to San Francisco State.
  • On Sept. 30, SSU's match vs. CSUMB was deemed a forfeit due to COVID protocol. Per CCAA regulations, the contest will be counted as a win for the Seawolves in the league standings but will not affect its overall record.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM returned five starters from the 2019 season - Grecia Cordero-Barr (L), Kassy Doering (MB), Micah Hébert (OH), Madison Turner (S) and Emily Vander Weide (OH).
  • Nine will be donning Cougar Blue for the first time in 2021 with the combination of last year's and this year's freshman classes.
  • The 2019 season ended on a high note with the Cougars recording their first-ever CCAA Tournament victory, a five-set thriller over Stanislaus State.
  • CSUSM's 2019 season came to an end in the next match, falling to eventual NCAA Division II National Champion Cal State San Bernardino.
  • As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM concluded 2019 ranked third in kills per set (13.08), blocks per set (2.12) and digs per set (15.40).
  • Grecia Cordero-Barr was the 2019 CCAA leader in digs per set (4.70) and was second in total digs (437).
  • In the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Cougars were picked to finish third.

THE LEONARD FILE

  • Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her eleventh season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
  • Leonard has a 181-119 (.603) record as CSUSM's head coach.
  • In 16 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 273-245 (.527) career record.
  • Leonard was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings during the 2017 season.
