Forstie's Walk-Off Lifts Cougars to 1-0 Victory in Series Finale Over SSU

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Melody Forstie crushed a walk-off RBI double in the eighth inning to lift the Cal State San Marcos softball team to a 1-0 victory over Sonoma State in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series finale. The Cougars dropped the doubleheader opener 8-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars squeezed out a run in the bottom of the first by taking advantage of a Seawolf error to take a 1-0 lead.
  • SSU evened it at 1-all in the top of the second on Nicole Renner's RBI single up the middle.
  • The Seawolves tacked on three runs on five hits in the top of the fourth to take the lead at 4-1.
  • Jordan Martinez crushed her fourth home run of the series, a two-run jack in the fifth to extend SSU's lead to 6-1.
  • A CSUSM error and a bases-loaded walk gave the Seawolves their final two runs in the top of the seventh.
 
QUICK HITS
  • The Cougars dropped to 10-22 overall and 6-19 in CCAA action while the Seawolves moved up to 24-9, 14-6 in conference play.
  • Ellie Smith (2-9) took the loss after giving up six runs on 10 hits over 5.1 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Marissa Alvarez's first collegiate hit, a bunt single, broke up SSU's no hitter in the bottom of the fifth.
  • After giving up a leadoff single to Julie Davis in the top of the eighth, the Cougars pulled off a double play on a sac bunt when Davis was called out at third on Forstie's diving tag.
  • In the top of the eighth, Silas hit a one-out shot for a single through the left side before coming home on Forstie's RBI double off the left center wall.
 
QUICK HITS
  • The Cougars improve to 11-22 overall and 7-19 in conference action while the Seawolves fall to 24-10, 14-7 in CCAA play.
  • Munoz collected her first win of the season, tossing a complete-game shutout and scattering six hits over eight innings in the circle.
