AS A FRESHMAN IN 2019
  • Made 20 appearances in the circle with 12 starts. 
  • Finished the season with a 3-9 record and a team-low 3.37 ERA.
  • Posted a team-high 48 strikeouts over 79 innings of work. 
  • Recorded her first win in a 5-4 decision against Concordia Portland (Feb. 17), tossing a complete game while allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits. 
  • Crushed a pinch-hitting, bases-clearing double against Dominican (March 30).

PERSONAL
  • Born in Victorville, Calif.
  • Daughter of Jane Lao-Smith.
  • Has a younger sister, Tegan Marie and a younger brother, Payton Matthew.
  • Enjoys spending time with her brother, watching her sister compete in gymnastics (floor competitions), going on excursions with her roommates, binge watching “Friends” and kayaking at Baby Beach with her sister.
  • Favorite movies are “Coco”, “Trouble with the Curve”, “World War Z” and “Moneyball”.
  • Roots for the New York Yankees.
  • Favorite athlete is Cat Osterman.
  • Greatest influence is her mom.
  • Pregame superstitions are to always eat at Raising Canes at least 24 hours before a game, meditate and put on her uniform in a specific order.
  • Most memorable moment was throwing the final strike for the third out to win the national championship for her travel team, followed by the whole team running out of the dugout for a dogpile.
  • During a summer internship at the RUHS Hospital Emergency Room this past summer, she had the unique opportunity to scrub in and observe a three hour open heart surgery.
  • Has volunteered at the RUHS Hospital Emergency Room since 2014.
  • One of the aspects she absolutely loves about CSUSM is interpersonally tightly knit communities that exist within campus. 
  • In the summer of 2019, she got accepted into the Future Physician Leadership (ran by UCR Medical School. She conducted a community research project about the effects of electronic cigarettes in adolescents. She reached out to 100 middle and high school students and measured their knowledge. Her work was chosen out of 30 projects to present at the UCR School of Medicine Conference. 
  • Plans on majoring in Human Development with emphasis in health care sciences.
