Cougars Earn First CCAA Sweep in Program History with Wins Against East Bay

SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal State San Marcos softball team earned its first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) sweep in program history with a pair of victories (9-3, 4-3) over Cal State East Bay on Saturday at San Francisco State Softball Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 lead on four hits and a CSUSM error in the fourth inning.
  • Forstie's RBI double through the left side scored Silas after she drew a two-out walk in the fifth.
  • The Cougars posted four runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.
  • Brittany Scardina hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring Newhouser home after she led off the sixth inning with a single.  
  • Silas' two-RBI single up the middle scored Fisher, who singled, and Calderon, who drew a walk, to give CSUSM the lead at 4-3 in the sixth.
  • Valdez, who reached on an error, plated on Forstie's RBI single through the left side to close out the scoring in the sixth at 5-3.
  • In the seventh, Newhouser once again led off with a single before Fisher crushed a home run to make it 7-3.
  • CSUSM got some insurance runs on Forstie's two-RBI single through the right side to make it 9-3.
  • After a CSUSM error, Slack retired the side to earn the win.
 
QUICK HITS
  • CSUSM improves to 4-5 overall and 3-4 in CCAA play while the Pioneers fall to 2-5, 0-3 in conference action.
  • Entering in relief, Slack picked up her first win of the season after 3.2 scoreless innings of action.
  • Fisher collected her second home run of the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars got things started in the second by taking advantage of a CSUEB error as Fisher scored after leading off with a single.
  • CSUSM doubled its lead in the third on Wood's sacrifice fly to right field to score Nikki Andelin.
  • The Pioneers cut the deficit to 2-1 on Sarah Fukushima's home run to left center in the bottom of the third.
  • Another CSUEB home run, this time by Meghan Araneta, evened the game at 2-2.
  • Wood crushed a two-run homer to left center in the fifth to put CSUSM back on top at 4-2.
  • East Bay attempted a rally in the bottom of the frame with Emilie Portesi hitting a solo home run to make it 4-3.
  • Ellie Smith came in to the game in relief in the bottom of the seventh and forced three consecutive ground outs to end the game.
 
QUICK HITS
  • The Cougars (5-5, 4-4 CCAA) earned their first conference series sweep in program history after almost accomplishing it in the last two outings against CSUEB, both were 3-1 series wins.
  • Slack earned her second win of the day after going 3.0 innings, relinquishing one run and striking out one.
  • Smith collects her first save of 2019 after retiring the side in the seventh.

The Cougars return home next week to host No. 6 Chico State on March 1-2 at CSUSM Softball Field.
