CSUSM Falls Twice to No. 8 Chico State

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team dropped both ends of Friday's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader (11-3, 3-2) to No. 8 Chico State at CSUSM Softball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Chico's Brooke Larsen got things started in the top of the third with an RBI single up the middle to put the Wildcats up 1-0.
  • A grand slam by Wendy Cardinali down the left field line made it a 5-0 ballgame in the fourth inning.
  • The Wildcats tacked on four more runs in the top of the fifth to take an 11-0 lead.
  • CSUSM posted three runs in the bottom of the fifth, beginning with an RBI single by Newhouser and followed by back-to-back walks by Fisher and Scardina.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CSUSM took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Scardina singled and advanced to second as Newhouser scored on an error by Chico State.
  • Chico State evened the game at 1-all in the top of the third on a CSUSM error.
  • The Wildcats took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on Claire Wayne's RBI single up the middle.
  • Amanda Flores hit an RBI triple to the deep right corner to extend Chico's lead to 3-1 in the sixth.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Ellie Smith hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Caitlin Vinyard and made it 3-2.

  • CSUSM drops to 5-7 overall and 4-6 in conference while the Wildcats improve to 14-3, 12-2 in CCAA play.
