History Made: CSUSM Women’s Golf Wins 2018 CCAA Championships

SONOMA, Calif. –With a 19-stroke cushion, the Cal State San Marcos women's golf team won the school's first-ever California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) team title with a three-round total of 39-over 903. Sophomore Jaime Jacob also made school history, becoming CSUSM's first individual champion with a 4-over 220.
 
Guided by fourth-year head coach Greg Hutton, the Cougars are ranked No. 2 in the West Region and will find out on April 30 if they made it to the 2018 NCAA West Regional. Fort Lewis will serve as host of the NCAA West Regional on May 7-9 in Durango, Colo. at the Hillcrest Golf Club.
 
Individually, four Cougar golfers cracked the top 10 in the final standings. Jacob led the field of 30, freshman Claire Hogle taking runner-up honors, junior Sarah Garcia tying for third and sophomore Savannah Magallon tying for seventh place.
 
Jacob, Hogle and Garcia join Cal State East Bay's Caroline Chang and Sabrina Virtusio of Sonoma State on the CCAA All-Tournament Team.

 
Jacob sat atop the leaderboard for a majority of the tournament and finished with a six-stroke over teammate Hogle.
 
Hogle made an impressive run, finishing right behind Jacob with a 10-over 226. Hogle birdied the 14th and 17th holes to end even-par on the back nine.
 
Garcia moved up two spots to finish with a three-round total of 11-over 227. Garcia birdied three consecutive holes, 11th, 12th and 13th, in the final round.
 
Vaulting four spots, Magallon carded a final-round team-low even-par 72 to conclude with a 14-over 230.
 
Junior Bergen Benedict tied for 18th with a 25-over 241.
 
Sonoma State took home runner-up honors with a 58-over 922, followed by Cal State Monterey Bay (939, +75), Cal State East Bay (951, +87), Chico State (960, +96) and Cal State L.A. (1192, +328)
