PLEASANTON, Calif. – Sophomore
Jaime Jacob was the individual medalist at the 2018 Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout, leading the Cal State San Marcos women's golf team to a third-place finish at the Callippe Preserve in Pleasanton.
In its second-consecutive top-five finish, CSUSM posted a 17-over 305 on Tuesday and finished with a two-round total of 42-over 618 (313-305) just four shots behind second-place Academy of Art (614, +38). Cal Baptist took home the team title after carding a two-round score of 35-over 611. Cal State Monterey Bay placed fourth with a score of 53-over 629 while Simon Fraser (633, +57) and Sonoma State (633, +57) tied for fifth to round out the top-five on the leaderboard.
The win is the second in the last three tournaments for Jacob. The Cougars have had the individual top score now in all three tournaments they have competed in to start the spring season with
Bergen Benedict tying for first last week.
Jacob finished the tournament at 3-over 147 (76-71) and led the field in par 5 scoring (E), second on par 3's (E) and tied for third with three birdies. Her one-under par performance in the second round propelled her over Art U's Sterling Hawkins by one stroke.
After tying for seventh place, sophomore
Savannah Magallon shot a 9-over 153 (78-75) and collected her best result of the season. She led the field with 13 pars. Junior
Bergen Benedict posted a 13-over 157 (80-77) for a three-way tie for 16th place.
Senior
Christina Trujillo tied for 30th after shooting a 17-over 161 (79-82) and junior
Sarah Garcia placed in a five-way tie for 39th with a score of 20-over 164 (80-84).
The Cougars had the lowest par 3 score (+3) and recorded 55 pars, most of the 17-team field.
Next up for the Cougars is the Augustana Spring Fling on Thurday, March 15 and Friday, March 16 at The Classic Club in Palm Desert.
