LA JOLLA, Calif. – Victories from seniors
A.J. Freund and
Ryan Maize led the Cal State San Marcos men's track & field team to a fourth-place result at the California Collegiate Invitational at Triton Track & Field on the campus of UC San Diego on Saturday.
The Cougars collected 74 to finish fourth, 11.50 behind third-place finisher Williams.
Freund won the 10,000m with a time of 34:35.32, the third-fastest time of his career to earn his first collegiate victory and earn 10 points for the Cougars.
Maize won the 1500m with a time 3:54.92, his second career victory in the event as a Cougar and his second win overall this season, including a win in the 3000m steeplechase at the
Oxy Distance Carnival.
Senior
Justin Washington placed second in the 800m with a time of 1:54.52, his fourth top five result in the event this season.
Sophomore
Bryce Johnson registered a third-place result in the 110H with a mark of 14.99, his second-best time of the season.
Two Cougars posted qualifiers for the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships. Sophomore
Steven Terris qualified for his first event, running a personal best 4:03.15 in the 1500m to finish 13th, while freshman
Shea Vavra qualified in the 800m with a time of 1:57.99, a personal best that meets the standard by 0.01 seconds. Vavra finished in 11th and previously qualified in the 1500m.
In the field events, freshman
Antonio Riggins finished fifth in the triple jump with a personal best leap of 13.57m, while freshman
Nick Samuels placed eighth with a mark of 13.37m.
Senior
Patrick Holstrom finished eighth in the javelin with a throw of 51.79m and freshman
Nick Heid cleared 1.85m in the high jump to place ninth.
Freshman
Mark Werley (10:25.13) and
Jhair Torres (10:26.39) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 3000m steeplechase.
The relay teams posted two season best marks, with the 4x100m squad of Johnson, sophomores
Tyler Luis and
Nathan Hale, Jr. and freshman
Brian Wright starting things off finishing fourth with a time of 42.95. In the 4x400m relay, the team of Luis, Hickman, senior
Caine Harder and Hale, Jr. placed third with a time of 3:23.44 that qualified CSUSM for the CCAA Championships. Right on their heels was the relay of Maize, Vavra, freshman
Casey Cruz and Washington, who finished fourth with a time of 3:24.67 that also bested the CCAA qualifying standard.
Next up for CSUSM will be the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Saturday, April 8 in Claremont, Calif.
