LOS ANGELES – Justin Washington won the men's 800m and
Josh Maffei broke a program record in the shot put that had stood for 10 years in an impressive day of competition for the men's track & field team at the Cal State LA Invitational on Saturday.
Washington ran a 1:55.56 for the victory in the 800m, a time that qualifies him for California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship. The victory is Washington's first of the year and third of his Cougar career.
Shea Vavra picked up his second top 10 finish of the season in the 800m, finishing 10th with a time of 2:00.76.
Maffei threw 13.45m in the shot put to place eighth, breaking the mark Ronnie McFadden set at the 2007 Point Loma Invitational by .22m. The throw qualified Maffei for his third CCAA event, having previously qualified in the discus and javelin.
Patrick Holstrom had a strong showing in the javelin for the second straight week, throwing 54.33m to finish runner-up after collecting the victory in last week's Mangrum Invitational.
Nick Samuels (13.44m) and
Antonio Riggins (13.40m) picked up personal bests in the triple jump, finishing sixth and eighth, respectively.
Nick Heid hit CCAA qualifiers in the triple jump (12.89m) and high jump (1.87m), achieving personal bests in both to finish 11th and 12th in the respective events.
Tyler Luis also qualified for CCAA championships in two events, running personal bests in the 100m (11.056) and 200m (22.69) and placing 16th and 24th, respectively.
Bryce Johnson qualified in his second event, hitting the 100m qualifier with a mark of 11.23, a personal best. Johnson is also qualified in the 110H.
The Cougars will participate in two competitions next week, with the distance runners making a return trip to Los Angeles for the Oxy Distance Carnival on Friday, March 10 and the remaining members of the squad competing on Saturday, March 11 in the San Diego Collegiate Challenge at UC San Diego.
