LOS ANGELES – Senior
Ryan Maize and freshman
Joshua Litwiller collected victories for the Cal State San Marcos men's track & field team on a day of strong performances at the Oxy Distance Carnival at Bill Henry Track on the campus of Occidental College on Friday.
Maize won the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:04.66, just 3.28 seconds short of his own CSUSM record established on the same track at the
2015 Oxy Invitational. The mark is currently the fastest in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and qualifies Maize for the conference championships. His time also would stand as an NCAA Division II provisional qualifier; however as Candidacy Year Three members of NCAA Division II, the Cougars are not eligible to compete at the national championships.
Litwiller claimed the victory in the 10,000m, the first win of the freshman's collegiate career, with a personal best time of 31:03.12. The mark is just shy of the 31:00 NCAA Division II provisional standard and is the fifth-fastest in the CCAA this season. Sophomore
Steven Terris also finished just off the provisional time, placing second with a personal best of 31:07.12. The result is Terris' second top two finish of the season.
Senior
Justin Washington improved his CCAA qualifier in the 800m, finishing fourth with a time of 1:53.16. The mark currently ranks as the fastest of the season in the CCAA.
In the 5000m, sophomore
Joe Gonzalez ran a CCAA qualifier of 14:54.78, knocking 23.2 seconds off of his previous personal best and finishing 28th in a field of 223 competitors.
Sophomore
Bryce Johnson finished third in the 110H, improving his CCAA qualifying time with a personal best 15.02, the fourth-fastest in the CCAA this year.
Senior
Aaron Hickman ran a personal best 51.10 in the 400m, missing the CCAA qualifier by one-tenth of a second.
Sophomore
Tyler Luis finished eighth in the 100m with a time of 11.15.
In the field events, senior
Josh Maffei finished with three top ten results, placing sixth in the javelin (46.90m) and a picking up pair of ninth-place results in the shot put (13.20m) and discus (39.04m).
Freshman
Tim Stalboerger finished seventh in the javelin with a throw of 45.85m, while
Patrick Holstrom claimed the eighth spot with a mark 45.35m.
Next up for the Cougars is the Ross and Sharon Irwin Collegiate Scoring Meet at Point Loma on Saturday, March 18.
