SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Cal State San Marcos has been selected to host the NCAA Division II Women's Golf West Regional in 2020, the NCAA announced this week. The NCAA Division II Women's Golf West Regional will take place May 4-6 at
The Club at La Costa in Carlsbad, California.
"It is an honor that the NCAA has chosen CSUSM to be a host site of the 2020 NCAA Women's Golf Regional Tournament," said CSUSM Director of Athletics
Jennifer Milo. "We are excited to showcase the beautiful weather here in Southern California and the incredible golf course at La Costa. This is great exposure for our department and CSUSM as a whole on a national level."
As 2017-18 is CSUSM's inaugural season of being full-fledged members of NCAA Division II, the 2020 NCAA Regional will be the university's first time taking on hosting duties. CSUSM completed its three-year transition period this past summer.
"I think it says a lot that in our first year of being eligible as a full member of NCAA Division II that we were awarded a bid," said Head Coach
Greg Hutton. "It says a lot of how the NCAA sees our university."
The NCAA has selected more than 600 host sites for preliminary rounds and finals of predetermined championships in Divisions I, II and III to be held from 2017-18 through 2021-22.
"This will be a great experience for our women's team," Hutton said. "My first real recruiting class will be seniors that year and it will be a great opportunity for them to play their final regional locally where the community can come out and support them. This will be a huge advantage for us to be able to advance to nationals by playing a course like La Costa these next two years and then hosting the regional."
The CSUSM women's golf team is ranked 20th in the latest Golfstat.com Top 25. The Cougars placed first in two of its three fall golf tournaments including their home tournament, CSUSM's Fall Classic on Oct. 30-31. CSUSM opens its spring schedule at the Point Loma Reach 2018 on Feb. 5-6 in San Diego.
