LA JOLLA, Calif. – Junior
Hayden Weir (8-2) tossed a five-hit, complete-game shutout as the Cal State San Marcos baseball team collected a 4-0 victory in the California College Athletic Association (CCAA) twinbill opener at UC San Diego before falling 7-2 in the nightcap at Triton Ballpark on Saturday.
Sophomore
Tyler Place tallied three hits on the day including his second home run of the season.
The Cougars (22-25, 14-21 CCAA) will conclude their inaugural CCAA season tomorrow at noon when CSUSM hosts UCSD (30-18, 20-16) in the series finale. Prior to the first pitch, eight CSUSM seniors –

Emilio Esquibel,
Clinton Perez,
Jon Putnam and
Brandon Bentson – will be honored. The festivities begin at 11:30 a.m.
Sunday's game will also be head coach
Dennis Pugh's final game at CSUSM because he will be retiring at the end of the academic year.
Game 1: CSUSM 4 – UCSD 0
With one out, Putnam doubled down the right line and sophomore
Colin Dvorak followed with a walk. Junior
Ross Lemmel singled through the right side to load the bases. Junior
Hudson Bilodeau drew an RBI walk to put CSUSM on the board. Dvorak scored on Gamo's fielder's choice to the shortstop. CSUSM's final run came on a UCSD error. The inning ended on an over the fence catch by UCSD's third baseman J.D. Hearn on Bentson's foul ball.
CSUSM got a run in the top of the eighth on three walks and a hit by pitch to make it 4-0.
Weir fanned four and walked two Tritons in the nine innings. CSUSM's defense made three inning-ending double plays in the game.
Game 2: UCSD 7 – CSUSM 2
The Cougars offense came to a screeching halt for the first four innings of game two.
UCSD's Friedman hit a 2-RBI double down the left line to give the Tritons a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
The Tritons added another run in the third and three runs in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead.
In the fifth, freshman pinch hitter
Mark Van Skike's groundout put CSUSM on the board at 6-1.
UCSD extended is lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the frame, scoring a run on one hit and another CSUSM error.
Place's home run came in the sixth inning, when he launched the ball over the right field wall.
Senior
Emilio Esquibel (2-7) took the loss after giving up seven runs – five earned – as CSUSM's defense made four errors in the contest. For the season, only 34 of the 56 runs scored when Esquibel was on the hill were charged as earned runs.
UCSD starter Alon Leichman (3-4) collected the win after tossing a complete seven-inning game, giving up two runs and striking out seven batters.
