Cougars Shutout by Otters in Series Finale

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Senior L.A. Gamo went 2-for-3 at the plate, but the Cal State San Marcos baseball team couldn't push a run across in Sunday's 10-0 loss to No. 23 Cal State Monterey in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series finale at CSUSM Baseball Field.

The Cougars drop to 21-23 overall and 13-19 in conference action. The Otters (31-14, 20-13 CCAA) move into first place alongside Chico State in the CCAA North Division.

Senior Clinton Perez went 2-for-4 with a double.

The Cougars tallied nine hits to Monterey Bay's 12 but stranded 10 runners and only recorded one extra base hit.

Three consecutive singles in the top of the fourth put a run on the board for the Otters. After a walk loaded the bases, CSUMB's Matt Urakami hit a grand slam over the right field wall on the first pitch he saw.

CSUMB recorded two runs in the fifth and three runs in the seventh, highlighted by Will Rosado's 2-run homer.

Senior Manny Barragan started for CSUSM, lasting four innings in which he allowed seven runs – six earned – on six hits and two walks. He struck out five batters in the contest.  On a scheduled bullpen day, CSUMB starter Jeffrey Ahern (2-1) earned the win after three shutout innings of work.

The Cougars conclude their 2016 campaign next weekend in a split series with UC San Diego.
