Cougars Fall in Series Opener to Tritons

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team dropped an 11-2 decision on Friday afternoon in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action at CSUSM Baseball Field.

Due to constant rain in the morning, the game started just under a half an hour later than originally scheduled to enable extra field preparation. A few minutes after the final out, the sky opened up and the rain began to fall again.

The Cougars drop to 21-24 overall and 14-20 in CCAA. UCSD improves to 29-17, 19-15 in conference play.

Senior Brandon Bentson hit a one-out two-run homer with the help of the wind in the bottom of the ninth inning. The home run prevented CSUSM from being shutout in consecutive games for the second time in program history. The Cougars dropped back-to-back 5-0 decisions to Concordia-Irvine on March 22, 2014.

The Tritons batted around in the first inning, recording four runs on four hits, two walks, two wild pitches and a CSUSM error.

UCSD knocked in two runs in the third and a single run in the seventh to take a 7-0 lead. The Tritons matched their opening frame run total in the final inning, highlighted by a 2-RBI double by Tyler Howsley.

Bentson went 3-for-5 and recorded his second home run of the season.  Junior Hudson Bilodeau and sophomore Tyler Place each tallied two hits.

CSUSM left 13 runners on base while UCSD stranded nine.

UCSD's Tim White went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

The two teams will return to the diamond tomorrow at noon for a doubleheader at Triton Ballpark in La Jolla.
