CARSON, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team snapped a seven-game skid with a 7-6 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Friday afternoon at Toro Diamond.
Jon Putnam went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and a RBI,
Austin Ott was 2-for-3 with two runs, and
Cameron MacKenzie (4-1) pitched seven solid innings as the Cougars earned their first victory since March 4.
CSUSM improves to 11-14 overall and 3-10 in the CCAA. CSUDH drops to 10-10, 5-6 CCAA.
RBI singles from Clint Perez and
Brandon Bentson handed the Cougars their first two runs, but the Toros kept pace with two of their own and the teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the third.
Hudson Bilodeau drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Cougars in the lead in the sixth before
Riley Manquen's RBI sac fly made it 4-2.
Colin Dvorak drove in Perez with a sac fly in the seventh before Putnam came home on a throwing error by the Toro centerfielder.
In the eighth, Putnam tacked on the Cougars' final run, making it 7-2 with a sacrifice fly to drive in Ott.
MacKenzie did well to keep CSUDH at bay between the fourth and seventh innings, allowing just one hit within that span. He left in the eighth inning after allowing a single and walking a batter. He finished with four earned runs against, a strikeout and three walks.
The Toros combined to score three runs off relievers
Marc Vela and
Alex Wall to pull within 7-5 in the eighth. However,
Hayden Weir came on to force an inning-ending double play.
CSUDH scored another run after a double off Weir in the ninth, but he eventually earned his second save of the season by getting Brady Conlon to ground out.
The Cougars and Toros will play games two and three of their four-game series starting Saturday at noon at CSUSM Baseball Field.
