SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team scored three runs in the ninth inning, but the Cougars left the bases loaded to fall 8-6 to Cal State L.A. on Saturday afternoon in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action at CSUSM Baseball Field.
The Cougars recorded 15 hits to CSULA's 11, but the CSUSM pitching staff walked eight Golden Eagles in the contest.
CSUSM falls to 9-5 overall, while the Golden Eagles snap an 11-game skid to improve to 2-11 on the year. Both squads are 1-1 in CCAA action.
Sophomore
Tyler Place led CSUSM's offense, going 3-for-5 with a stolen base. Seniors
Brandon Bentson and
L.A. Gamo, along with junior
Colin Dvorak and sophomore
Austin Ott each tallied two hits in the game.
On an unusual double play, CSUSM got out of a bases-loaded jam by allowing only one run in the first inning. The Golden Eagles doubled the lead in the second on Johnson's two-out RBI single through the left side.
CSUSM got on the board in the third on senior
Jon Putnam's double down the left line that plated Bentson.
The Cougars took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Dvorak led off with a double and scored on junior
Ross Lemmel's single. A well-place sacrifice bunt by junior
Hudson Bilodeau advanced Lemmel who later scored on Place's single up the middle.
CSUSM's lead was short lived as CSULA put together three runs off three hits in fifth inning. A pair of runs in the sixth and a single run in the seventh extended the Golden Eagles' lead to 8-3.
The Cougars hoped a bit of ninth inning magic from Friday's series opener victory would come into play. Bilodeau and Place hit back-to-back singles off of CSULA's reliever Jordan Cavazos. With one out and runners at the corners, Bentson singled through the right side to plate Bilodeau. A fly out by Putnam advanced Place to third and senior
Clinton Perez drew a walk to load the bases. Gamo's headfirst slide on his infield hit to CSULA's first baseman scored another run for the Cougars. CSUSM's final run came on a bases loaded walk to Dvorak.
Senior
Manny Barragan (2-1) took the loss after giving up five runs on seven hits and walking five in 4 1/3 innings of work. CSULA's Christian Broussard, Jr. went eight innings to collect his first win of 2016.
The Cougars will close out the four-game series with a doubleheader at Cal State L.A. on Sunday at 11 a.m.
