Cougars Drop Two at Cal State L.A.

LOS ANGELES – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team dropped both ends of its first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader, 8-0 and 8-7 (7 inn.) to Cal State L.A. on Sunday at Reeder Field.

The Cougars fall to 9-7 overall and 1-3 in CCAA competition. CSULA improves to 4-11, 3-1 CCAA.

Freshman Tyler Ankrom went 4-for-4 on the day with three RBIs and one double.

The Cougars face Cal State San Bernardino in another split series next weekend.

Game 1
Junior Colin Dvorak went 2-for-4 and the Cougars totaled eight hits, one less than CSULA, but were unable to push a run across.

The Golden Eagles scored single runs in the first, second and fourth frames. The first came on a CSUSM error, followed by a ground out and a sacrifice fly.

CSULA put the game out of reach in the seventh, scoring three runs on four walks, a hit by pitch and a wild pitch to make it 6-0. Two more Golden Eagle runs in the eighth closed out the scoring in the contest.

Taylor Ahearn (1-2) took the loss after six innings on the hill, giving up three runs on eight hits.

Arnett Johnson and Nathan Navarrete each tallied two hits for CSULA. Mitchell Moore tossed eight shutout innings and recorded six strikeouts for the win.

Game 2

It was CSUSM's turn to jump out first, scoring single runs in the second and third innings to take their first lead of the day.

Their lead was short lived as the Golden Eagles knocked in seven runs on four hits that included a three-run homer by Navarrete in the bottom of the third inning.

CSUSM responded with three runs in the next half frame. Dvorak hit a one-out double and scored on Ankrom's single. After junior Ross Lemmel reached on an error, sophomore Tyler Place and senior Brandon Bentson hit back-to-back RBI singles to close the game to 7-5.

In the fifth, Ankrom crushed a 2 RBI single up the middle to knot the game at 7-7.

Navarrete led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, advanced around the bases on a CSUSM error, passed ball and a balk to score the winning run for CSULA.

Reliever Hayden Weir (1-1) took the loss after 1.2 innings of action, relinquishing just one unearned run. After putting together back-to-back shutout innings, CSULA's Holden Berger (1-0) records the win and Gabriel Gentner picks up his second save of the year.
