Cougars Retaliate with Doubleheader Sweep Over CUI

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team responded to yesterday's twinbill sweep with a sweep of its own against Concordia (Calif.) Saturday at CSUSM Baseball Field. The Cougars crushed the visiting Eagles 13-0 in the doubleheader opener before holding on to a 4-3 victory in game two.

In game one, senior Manny Barragan collected his first win of the season and shared the shutout with senior Jordan Kunz. Barragan went eight innings, giving up only five hits and a walk while striking out four batters.

Senior Cameron MacKenzie tossed a seven-inning complete game in the nightcap. He tallied seven strikeouts in the outing.

Senior Clinton Perez joined sophomores Tyler Place and Austin Ott with four hits on the day.

The Cougars continue their five-game home stand with a single game against San Diego Christian on Tuesday, Feb. 16. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.

Game 1: CSUSM 13 – CUI 0
CSUSM wasted no time on Saturday, plating three runs on three hits, two walks and an error in the bottom of the first inning.

Place led off the third inning with a triple and senior Brandon Bentson followed with a home run over the right field wall to make it 5-0 CSUSM.

In the fourth inning, senior L.A. Gamo doubled down the left line and later scored on Ott's single.

The scoring was not done in the fourth as CSUSM tacked on three runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth.

Game 2: CSUSM 4 – CUI 3
For the first time in this series, the home team gave away a run in the first frame as CUI's Tino Leite led off with a single, stole second and later scored Jon Bornhop's single.

CSUSM answered quickly with two runs in the bottom half of the frame. Place doubled to left center and scored on Ott's single. Perez pushed Ott home on a double to put CSUSM on top 2-1.

Back-to-back singles to open the fifth inning put Place and Bentson at the corners. A sacrifice fly by Ott plated Place.  Bentson got in scoring position with a stolen base as senior Jon Putnam connected on a RBI single through the left side to extend CSUSM lead to 4-1.

Those runs became vital when Brett Barker hit a 2-run homer in the top of the seventh.  MacKenzie kept his cool, forcing two fly outs to center before ending the game with a pop up to third.
