IRVINE, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team dropped both ends of its road doubleheader at Concordia (Calif.) in non-conference action on Friday. The Eagles took game one 6-2 before recording a come-from-behind 4-2 victory in the nightcap.
CSUSM (4-3) returns home to host the Eagles (3-3) on Saturday in another doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
Game 1: CUI 6 – CSUSM 2 The Cougars found themselves in the hole early, giving up a run in the bottom of the first inning. Tino Leite led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by John Bornhop.
Both teams kept each other off the scoreboard for the next four and half innings. In the sixth, the Eagles tacked on four more runs on three hits and two CSUSM errors.
Junior
Ross Lemmel drew a one-out walk in the top of the eighth and scored on sophomore
Tyler Place's single through the left side to make it 5-1.
The Eagles took advantage of another CSUSM error in the eighth to make it 6-1.
The Cougars hoped to put together a ninth inning rally when senior
Brandon Bentson led off with a double down the left line. He later scored on junior
Hudson Bilodeau's two-out single up the middle. CUI starter Isaiah Terrazas fanned the final Cougar to put an end to the scoring and the game.
Terrazas went the distance in the nine-inning affair, picking up his first win of the season after relinquishing two earned runs on seven hits.
Junior
Taylor Ahearn allowed six hits and fanned three over the course of seven innings to take the loss for the Cougars. He allowed five runs with only two of them being earned.
Game 2: CUI 4 – CSUSM 2 It was déjà vu for CSUSM as CUI's Leite once again led off with a single and eventually scored on a CSUSM throwing error to give the Eagles an 1-0 lead.
The Cougars responded quickly, knotting the game at 1-1 on junior
Colin Dvorak's bases loaded single in the top of the second.
CSUSM took its first lead of the game in the next frame when senior
Clinton Perez crushed an RBI double up the middle to plate Ott who reached base on a walk.
The Cougars were not granted time to get comfortable as CUI retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third. Hunter Holland knocked down a RBI double through the right side and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-2.
The Eagles recorded an insurance run in the fifth inning when Bornhop touched home on Spencer Nielsen's single after he doubled down with two outs.
Both teams each spread out five hits in the contest.
Senior
Emilio Esquibel (1-1) took the loss after allowing three runs – two earned – in 3 2/3 innings. CUI's Jose Cardona collected the win after three innings of work.
