Vanessa Chap, Christina Trujillo Named NAIA All-America

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Cal State San Marcos women's golf team had gone five years without a NAIA All-American, but that changed when Vanessa Chap and Christina Trujillo were honored with the national award on Monday by the association.

Chap was selected as a First Team All-American, while Trujillo was named Second Team All-America.

Linnel DeVilla and Roxanne Mejia were the last two Cougars to be honored by the NAIA when they were Honorable Mention selections in 2008-09. The name Roxanne Mejia may be familiar to the Cougar faithful; now Roxy Mueller, she currently serves as the women's team's assistant coach.

"It's been great getting to coach Vanessa and Christina with the rest of the team. They worked hard and earned the honor of being named All-Americans," said CSUSM head coach Greg Hutton. "I'm very proud of both of them."

For Chap, a senior San Diego-native out of Torrey Pines High School, the accolade caps arguably the most successful individual career in the 16-year history of the program. She will graduate with the lowest career scoring average (78.47) of any CSUSM player with three or more years within the program.

In addition, Chap became CSUSM's first individual Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference champion when she shot a school-record of 1-under 143 at the A.I.I. Conference Championship on Apr. 27-28. Her final-round 70 in the conference tournament tied for the third-lowest individual score in program annals.

In 11 tournaments in 2014-15, Chap registered five top-10 finishes and a pair of rounds of par or better. Her 76.89 scoring average this season was the second lowest in program history. She tied for 14th in the NAIA National Championship last week.

She took home A.I.I. Athlete of the Week and CSUSM Female Student-Athlete of the Month awards in early May, and was named an April Star of the Month by the San Diego Hall of Champions.

Trujillo, a sophomore from Visalia, Calif., averaged 77.78 strokes in 27 rounds and 11 tournaments this season. She had a team-high three rounds of par or better, including a 3-under 69 in the opening round of the Claude Jacobs Invite on Feb. 15 in Texas. The score matched the lowest in program history.

Trujillo posted six top-10 finishes and tied for third at the A.I.I. Conference Championship with a 1-over 145 total. She also shot 70 in the final round of the conference tournament.

CSUSM has had nine players earn a total of 10 NAIA All-America awards. Stephanie Segura is the only other Cougar to have earned first-team status* (2008-09).

*Stephanie Segura (2003-04), Nicole Carnes (2001-02) and Effie Rengpian (2000-01) were named NAIA All-America, but it was not specified which teams they were included on according to NAIAhonors.com.
