Cougars Hit Road for Three Games Before Senior Day Doubleheader Saturday

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team begins its longest road trip of the season on Tuesday, April 7 with a single game at Vanguard before kicking off a four-game split series against Antelope Valley on Friday, April 10 in Lancaster.  On Saturday, the Cougars will have a short senior day presentation between the two games against UAV at CSUSM Baseball Field.

Vanguard Preview
All-time vs. VU: 16-12
Last Meeting: W, 8-7 (Feb. 10, 2015). Senior Denny Vigo's two-out RBI double in the seventh inning pushed the Cougars past the visiting Lions earlier this season. CSUSM jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings but Vanguard responded with five runs in the third and two more in the fifth inning.
VU Breakdown: Vanguard is in the midst of a nine-game win streak that included three-game sweeps over William Jessup, Arizona Christian and San Diego Christian. The Lions have tallied 88 stolen bases this season, ranking them No. 12 in the nation.
 
Antelope Valley Preview
All-time vs. UAV: 11-0
Last Series: 3-0 (Feb. 20-21, 2015). CSUSM recorded a doubleheader sweep (11-3, 14-0) at UAV before clinching the series sweep with a 6-4 win at home. The Cougars dominated in the series, out-hitting the Pioneers 41-17 with 10 extra base hits. 
UAV Breakdown: The Pioneers got crushed by visiting Bethesda last Saturday, dropping 16-5 and 18-1 decisions to the Flames.
 
Notes
In March, the Cougars outscored their opponents 109-32 and recorded four shutouts … Stefan Miladinovich has tallied 18 multi-hit games and Ray Patchen has recorded 10 multi-RBI games this season … Emilio Esquibel is one victory away from sharing top honors in the CSUSM record books with James Dykstra (2103) as the single-season leader with nine wins. Esquibel has recorded five combined shutouts, pairing up with Justin Hertzmann for four of them.
 
CSUSM Record Books
Senior closer Justin Hertzmann became the CSUSM single-season record holder in saves on Saturday after recording his eighth of the season, passing Andrew Larsen (2012). Hertzmann already holds the CSUSM career record with 17 saves.
 
Senior third baseman Ray Patchen's hitting streak is back on after the La Sierra official scorer reversed a decision made on March 22nd.  His 24-game hit streak is now the longest in CSUSM baseball program history, passing Kevin Silvett's 23-game record set in 2010. Patchen has also moved ahead of Denny Vigo's 23-game streak of reaching base safely set earlier this season. Patchen ranks No. 6 in the CSUSM record books.

Who We Are
CSUSM is an NAIA Division I institution which competes in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference. CSUSM was accepted into NCAA Division II Candidacy Year One and the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) during the summer and is currently going through a three-year transition phase in order to gain full NCAA DII status for the 2017-18 season. The 2014-15 season will be the school's final year in the NAIA.
