SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team's offense continued to perform as the Cougars completed a series sweep over Bethesda on Saturday afternoon. CSUSM copied Friday's second game score with an 11-0 victory in the opener before snagging a 10-1 win in the 7-inning nightcap.
Junior
Stefan Miladinovich led all hitters with a 5-for-9 performance that included three doubles and a triple in the first game. He also pushed in five runs while scoring three times.
Junior
Emilio Esquibel and
Jordan Kunz worked together to give the Cougars their seventh shutout of 2015. Junior
Manny Barragan tossed a complete seven-inning game and gave up only one run.
The Cougars (16-8) return to the field on Tuesday, March 10 when they host San Diego Christian at 2 p.m. at CSUSM Baseball Field.
Game 1After taking a 1-0 lead in the first thanks to a Bethesda error, the Cougars broke open the game with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth. CSUSM put together nine hits that included a
Dylan Costello triple and doubles by freshman
Tyler Place and Miladinovich.
Senior
Denny Vigo and junior
Clinton Perez began the seventh inning with back-to-back singles. Sophomore
Ross Lemmel doubled down the right line and freshman
Austin Ott flied out to right field for the sacrifice to push both runners across the plate to make it 10-0.
The Cougars added one more run in the eighth when Miladinovich lead off the game with a double and scored on a ground out by senior
Kory Smith.
Esquibel picked up a team-best fifth win after pitching 7.1 shutout innings, giving up eight hits while striking out four and walking two. Kunz closed the game without giving up a hit in 1.2 innings of work.
Game 2A six-run sixth inning in the finale guaranteed a series sweep for the Cougars.
The Flames took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third after Abundis led off with a triple and scored on a groundout. The Cougars answered with two runs in their half of the frame. After back-to-back singles by juniors
John Swilley and
L.A. Gamo, they performed a textbook double steal to even the game at 1-1. Gamo later plated on junior
Brandon Bentson's double to right center.
CSUSM added two more runs in the next inning on Gamo's bases loaded single and a fielder's choice by Miladinovich.
The sixth inning blowout was highlighted by back-to-back doubles by senior
Ray Patchen and Smith.
Barragan evened his record at 2-2 with the win, giving up one run on seven hits. He struck out six batters and walked none in the outing.
Notes: Miladinovich's three doubles in the doubleheader opener tied the CSUSM record for most in a game that was set by
Jon Putnam this season at Antelope Valley on Feb. 20 … Vigo continues to be Mr. Consistent, extending his streak of reaching base safely to 21 games but did not play in the series finale … Patchen recorded hits in both games to raise his hitting streak to 15 games.
