Cougars Dominate San Diego Christian with 15-5 Victory

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Cal State San Marcos tallied a season-high 19 hits and scored in every inning but one in a 15-5 win over San Diego Christian on Tuesday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field. The Cougars (17-6) picked up their fifth consecutive win while the Hawks dropped to 7-20 on the year.

Every available position player saw the field for the Cougars with 10 different batters recording hits.

Junior Brandon Bentson led the way with a 5-for-6 performance, recording four RBIs and two runs.  Junior Stefan Miladinovich went 2-for-3 that included his fourth home run of the season.  Senior Dylan Costello also sent one over the wall, collecting his second homer of 2015.

The Cougar offense started on a Ray Patchen sacrifice fly in the first and never let up. Three runs in the third inning put the game out of reach for the Hawks as Costello homered and John Swilley and Bentson each drove in runs.

Miladinovich led off the fifth with a home run and Patchen pushed Bentson across the plate to make it 12-5 CSUSM.

The only inning CSUSM didn't score in was the seventh as SDCC's Juan Moreno retired the side.

CSUSM starter Joe Fernandez had an uncharacteristic outing, giving up three runs on four hits in 2.2 innings of work.  Junior Cameron MacKenzie tossed three scoreless innings to earn his first win of the season, giving up only one hit and striking out four.

Chris Davidson led SDCC's offense, going 2-for-3 with two runs.

The Cougars are back in action this weekend, hosting a three-game series with University of Sioux Falls beginning with Saturday's doubleheader.  First pitch is 11 a.m.

Notes: The Cougars have scored 52 runs on 70 hits in the last five games … Senior Denny Vigo continues to be Mr. Consistent, reaching base in 22 consecutive games …  Senior Ray Patchen has also been consistent at the plate with a 16-game hit streak which ranks him third in program history behind Trent Jemmett (17 games, 2011) and Kevin Silvett (23 games, 2010).
