Cougars Finish 2nd Among Strong NAIA Field at Primm Battle

PRIMM, Nev. – The No. 7 Cal State San Marcos men's golf team posted its lowest 54-hole score of the spring season and finished runner up in the Primm Battle hosted by Grand View University (Iowa) at Primm Valley Golf Club.

The Cougars registered 10-under 854, 19 strokes back of champion No. 2 Oklahoma City (835, -29). No. 3 British Columbia (857, -7) No. 5 Wayland Baptist (865, +1) and No. 6 Johnson & Wales (Fla.) (867, +3) rounded out the top-five, respectively.

By placing better than three higher ranked teams, the Cougars have a good likelihood of moving up in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches poll that will be released this Friday, Mar. 27.

CSUSM ended the tournament with a 4-under score of 284*. The Cougars posted 284 in the opening round before a 2-under 286 in Monday's round two.

Oklahoma City shot 17-under 271 in the final go-around to run away with the title. The Stars went into the day leading CSUSM by six strokes.

Dylan Healey and TJ Masters each tallied 2-under 70's to lead the way for the Cougars. Scott Shefflette carded 1-under 71 and Ryan Odom posted 1-over 73.

Masters and Shefflette each had two rounds under par during the competition.

The Cougars have finished runners-up in four straight NAIA tournaments. They'll wrap up the regular season slate, April 13-14 at Cal State Stanislaus' Hanny Stanislaus Invite in Turlock, Calif.
