SAN DIEGO – Two Cougars qualified for the NAIA National Championships and the Cal State San Marcos track & field teams won five individual events and a relay at the Ross & Sharon Irwin Collegiate Scoring Meet at Point Loma Nazarene on Saturday.
The meet was a team scored event, with the men finishing in third with 219 points while the women claimed fifth with 142 points.
Ryan Maize won the 1500m with an "A" standard time of 3:54.14, and is now qualified for nationals in two events. Maize had already punched his ticket with an "A" standard time of 9:08.92 in the steeplechase at the Oxy Distance Festival earlier this month.
Natalie Rodriguez also qualified for nationals in the 1500m, recording an "A" standard time of 4:39.93 which was good for fourth place in the event.
There are now eight student-athletes who have posted "A" standard times, qualifying them for nationals. Three others have posted "B" standard times.
The jumpers performed well, led by
Michael Anastasia who won both the long jump (6.32m) and triple jump (13.54m).
Michelle Fekete claimed the women's triple jump with a mark of 10.92m that was achieved on her first attempt.
Frederik Jahr won the high jump with a leap of 2.0m, just shy of the 2.03m "B" standard.
Hurdlers posted big points on the day, with
Jason Bandong taking second in the 400-meter hurdles (54.71) and
Kyle Johnson finishing in third in the 110-meter hurdles (15.14).
Brittany Hollie ran well again in the 100-meter hurdles, posting a "B" standard time of 14.81.
Justin Washington posted a third place finish in the 800m, with a time of 1:55.06.
Zach Laurenzana also performed well in the 1500m, with a time of 3:57.88 that was good for a fifth place finish.
Charlotte Kuzminsky ran well to claim fifth in the 1500m, but finished slightly off the "B" standard with a time of 4:44.32.
In the sprints, the women's 4x400m relay of
Kamarria Rehn, Elizabeth Bukle, Kuzminsky and
Genevieve Grigore finished in second (4:03.83) and the men's 4x100m relay of
Brendyn Heath,
Jordan Lucas,
John Tagulao and
Kyle Johnson took third (43.48).
The 4x400m relay of Bandong, Lucas,
Alex Gronotte and Washington closed out the day by winning with a time of 3:22.90.
