Cougars Compete in Northern New Mexico Classic This Weekend

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team plays three games in three days in the Northern New Mexico Classic beginning on Friday, Feb. 13.

South Dakota School of Mines Preview
All-time vs. SD Mines: 0-1
Last Meeting: L, 45-53 (Feb. 17, 2014).
SD Mines Breakdown: The Hardrockers became full-fledged members of the NCAA Division II in July 2013 and joined the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) last month.  SD Mines has won three of their last five games capped by an 89-82 win at Johnson & Wales.
 
Johnson & Wales Preview
All-time vs. JWU: 2-0
Last Meeting: W, 94-60 (Feb. 8, 2014). Four Cougars finished in double figures with Cassie Damyanovich leading the way with 19 points.  Heather Thompson (12 pts., 12 rebs.) and Sherika Miller (18 pts., 12 rebs.) each registered double-doubles.  CSUSM dished out 25 assists while shooting 49.4 percent from the field.
JWU Breakdown: So far, 2015 has been a tough year for JWU.  The Wildcats have just recorded one victory in their nine contests since the New Year.
 
Northern New Mexico Preview
All-time vs. NNMC: 3-0
Last Meeting: W, 71-60 (Jan. 24, 2015). Mackenzie Harnett registered a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds and Cassie Damyanovich recorded a game-high 22 with six 3-pointers last month when the Cougars hosted NNMC. CSUSM shot 45.6 percent and outrebounded the Eagles 46-33.
 NNMC Breakdown: The Eagles started the season strong by winning eight of their first nine games but have hit a rough spot since then, losing 12-of-16 games.
 
Last Game Recap
The Cougars captured a 58-41 victory over Bethesda last Saturday night at MiraCosta College. Senior Kimberly Kipp directed the Cougars to their ninth win in 11 games with a team-high 14 points. Senior Heather Thompson pulled down a game-high 14 boards on top of her nine points. Senior Mackenzie Harnett added nine points and 12 rebounds.

Two More Home Games After Saturday
Although it was Senior Night on Saturday, Jan 31, it was not the last time the Cougars will be playing at MiraCosta College this season.  CSUSM hosts Point Loma on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at and San Diego Christian on Wednesday, Feb. 25.
 
Who We Are
CSUSM is an NAIA Division I institution which competes in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference. CSUSM was accepted into NCAA Division II Candidacy Year One and the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) during the summer and is currently going through a three-year transition phase in order to gain full NCAA DII status for the 2017-18 season. The 2014-15 season will be the school's final year in the NAIA.
