California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The CCAA is made up of 12 CSU institutions and UC San Diego. The CCAA is one of the premier NCAA Division II leagues in the nation. Its teams have won more national championships (153) than any other NCAA Division II conference.
Rules Are A Changing in 2015-16There are major changes in women's basketball this season. Games will now consist of four 10-minute quarters rather than two 20-minute halves. Teams will also now be awarded two free throws for each common foul beginning with the fifth team foul in each quarter.
Cougars Coming Off First WinCSUSM earned its first victory of the season and first under head coach
Renee Jimenez last Saturday night, 63-46, over San Diego Christian in the Cougars' home opener. Sophomore
Savannah Camp racked up 14 points and the Cougars shot 50-percent for the game. CSUSM had fallen in two tough road games at UC San Diego and NCAA Division I UNLV prior to the game against SDCC.
Humboldt State PreviewAll-time vs. HSU: 0-1
Last Meeting vs. HSU: L, 75-78 (Oct. 29, 2011). The Cougars held a 73-69 lead with two minutes remaining, but a 9-2 run by the Lumberjacks crumpled CSUSM's hopes for its first win in program history. Four Cougars reached double digits in the contest with Danielle Cooper leading the way with 18 points.
HSU Breakdown: The Lumberjacks, picked to finish 5th in the CCAA preseason coaches' poll, has started the year on shaky ground with a 2-4 overall record. Sophomore Kiana Brown leads the 'Jacks offense with a 13.2 point scoring average while Amanda Kunst is averaging 12.7 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.
Sonoma State PreviewAll-time vs. SSU: 0-1
Last meeting: L, 62-63 (Oct. 28, 2011); CSUSM and SSU met in Rohnert Park in the Cougars' first-ever game as a program back in 2011. The Cougars trailed by as many as 10 in the second half, but rallied to have a shot to win the game as time expired. It didn't go in, but CSUSM left SSU with the confidence that they could compete at the intercollegiate level.
SSU Breakdown: Sonoma State, picked to finish last in the 2015-16 CCAA preseason coaches' poll, has not looked anything like a last-place team, having gone 2-2 on neutral courts and 2-0 at home thus far. The Seawolves went 1-2 at the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational over the Thanksgiving Weekend in Fairbanks, Alaska.
The Renee Jimenez FileRenee Jimenez took the helm of the CSUSM women's basketball program on May 22, 2015. Jimenez spent the last two seasons at Cal State San Bernardino (2013-15) after a five-year stint at Cal State Monterey Bay (2008-13).
New TerritoryAfter four seasons of competition in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the Cougars enter their first season of NCAA Division II competition in 2015-16. CSUSM is currently in the second year of a three-year transition to full NCAA Division II membership.
