Rules Are A Changing in 2015-16There are major changes in women's basketball this season. Games will now consist of four 10-minute quarters rather than two 20-minute halves. Teams will also now be awarded two free throws fro each common foul beginning with the fifth team foul in each quarter.
Last Game RecapThe Cougars snapped a three-game 20+point win streak by NCAA Division I UNLV in the 62-43 loss on Monday night. CSUSM also set a program single game record for 3-pointers, making 10 with seven coming in the second half. The Cougars were paced by
Savannah Camp and
Paige Barber, both with 12 points each, as the two combined to shoot 7-of-18 from 3-point range.
San Diego Christian PreviewAll-time vs. SDCC: 2-3
Last Meeting vs. SDCC: W, 51-50 (Feb. 25, 2015). Alex Alvarado scored the go-ahead layup with just 0.7 seconds left in regulation, lifting the Cougars to victory over the Hawks on Senior Night. It marked the second time CSUSM pulled off a 1-point victory over SDCC last season as the Cougars defeated the Hawks 54-53 on Dec. 20 in El Cajon.
SDCC Breakdown: The Hawks have started the season strong, registering victories over La Sierra (63-51), Simpson (56-54), Occidental (61-56) and Pacific Union (50-46). SDCC's lone loss came at the hands of Northwest Christen University (45-64).
The Renee Jimenez FileRenee Jimenez took the helm of the CSUSM women's basketball program on May 22, 2015. She brings a wealth of knowledge as a head coach in the CCAA, compiling a 125-71 record in the past seven seasons. Jimenez spent the last two seasons at Cal State San Bernardino (2013-15) after a five-year stint at Cal State Monterey Bay (2008-13).
New TerritoryAfter four seasons of competition in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the Cougars enter their first season of NCAA Division II competition in 2015-16. CSUSM is currently in the second year of a three-year transition to full NCAA Division II membership. As a part of the transition, the Cougars will be ineligible for postseason play in 2015-16 and 2016-17.
New ConferenceCal State San Marcos is in its first season competing in the
California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The CCAA is made up of 12 CSU institutions and UC San Diego. The CCAA is one of the premier NCAA Division II leagues in the nation. Its teams have won more national championships (153) than any other NCAA Division II conference.
