Last Meeting: L, 57-65 (Feb. 4, 2014). The Cougars were able to cut an 11-point deficit to one with four minutes remaining, but the PLNU Lions put together a 9-0 spurt to take the win. Then senior
Sherika Miller led CSUSM with 18 points. Senior
Cassie Damyanovich added 13 points while going 5-of-5 at the charity stripe. Senior
Heather Thompson pulled down 13 rebounds.
Point Loma Breakdown: After a three-year transition period, the PLNU Lions were granted full-fledge NCAA Division II membership on Sept. 1, 2014. Since defeating Cal Poly Pomona in their season opener, the Lions have entered a rough patch with six consecutive losses. Their last two games were only four-point losses, falling to Cal State Dominguez Hills (56-60) and Dixie State (67-71). Senior guard Jessica Escorza leads the PLNU charge averaging 16.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.

Damyanovich
tied a school record with 31 points, but Menlo College pulled away late to hand the CSUSM a 65-58 loss at the Cal Maritime Classic last season. Damyanovich went 14-of-24 (.583) from the field, marking a new program record with 14 made field goals. Thompson recorded 12 points and nine rebounds.
Menlo Breakdown: Menlo enter Saturday's contest ranked No. 14 in the latest NAIA Division II Coaches' Top 25 Poll. The Oaks are off to a solid start this season, racking up a 7-2 record with wins over Cal State Stanislaus and Sonoma State. Senior forward Laurel Donnenwirth is leading both the Oaks offense and defense, averaging 15.7 points and 12.4 rebounds per game.
Vanguard RecapThe Cougars made great strides last week in a tough game against No. 3 Vanguard. In the end, the Lions pulled away to take a 65-41 win at MiraCosta College. Thompson recorded her third double-double night with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Senior
Mackenzie Harnett had a team-high 15 points.
Where the Cougars Rank in NationWith eight games in the books this season, Thompson appears in five categories in the NAIA individual top 25 rankings:
- No. 12 in defensive rebounds per game (6.38)
- No. 18 in blocks per game (1.50)
- No. 22 in total blocks (12)
- No. 23 in field goal percentage (0.512)
- No. 24 in free throw percentage (0.828)
As a team, the Cougars are No. 21 in total rebound defense (35.8), No. 37 in 3-point field goal percentage (0.285) and No. 40 in field goal percentage (0.419).
Who We AreCSUSM is an NAIA Division I institution which competes in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference. CSUSM was accepted into NCAA Division II Candidacy Year One and the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) during the summer and is currently going through a three-year transition phase in order to gain full NCAA DII status for the 2017-18 season. The 2014-15 season will be the school's final year in the NAIA.
