Who We AreCSUSM is an NAIA Division I institution which competes in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference. CSUSM was accepted into NCAA Division II Candidacy Year One and the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) during the summer and is currently going through a three-year transition phase in order to gain full NCAA DII status for the 2017-18 season. The 2014-15 season will be the school's final year in the NAIA.

HIU Breakdown: The 23rd-ranked Royals enter Thursday's game on a two-game win streak after alternating wins and losses the first four games. Sophomore Emily Terwillinger has already accumulated 14 blocks, ranking her No. 2 in the nation and No. 4 in blocks per game (2.8). Senior Brittany Bauman is ranked 14th in points per game (21.4).
CSUSM-USDThe Cougars and the Toreros will be meeting for the third time since the CSUSM's women's basketball program began four seasons ago. The Cougars played a regular season game against USD in the program's inaugural season, dropping an 80-56 decision on Nov. 11, 2011. The following year, CSUSM went back to the JC Pavilion and fell 69-44, but this time the game was counted as an exhibition. The Toreros are picked to finish third in the West Coast Conference Preseason Poll, behind Gonzaga and BYU.

Defending the BoardsThe Cougars concluded their 2013-14 season ranked No. 5 in defensive rebounds per game, averaging 31.3 in their 33 games. After two games, CSUSM is ranked No. 33 with a 30.0 average. Don't count the Cougars out for they will be moving up in this category with the return of seniors
