Who We Are
CSUSM is an NAIA Division I institution which competes in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference. CSUSM was accepted into NCAA Division II Candidacy Year One and the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) during the summer and is currently going through a three-year transition phase in order to gain full NCAA DII status for the 2017-18 season. The 2014-15 season will be the school's final year in the NAIA.
 
Hope International Preview
All-time vs. HIU: 0-1
Last time vs. HIU: L, 59-68; Senior Cassie Damyanovich led all scorers with 19 points. Senior Heather Thompson snagged her seventh double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
HIU Breakdown:  The 23rd-ranked Royals enter Thursday's game on a two-game win streak after alternating wins and losses the first four games. Sophomore Emily Terwillinger has already accumulated 14 blocks, ranking her No. 2 in the nation and No. 4 in blocks per game (2.8). Senior Brittany Bauman is ranked 14th in points per game (21.4). 
 
CSUSM-USD
The Cougars and the Toreros will be meeting for the third time since the CSUSM's women's basketball program began four seasons ago. The Cougars played a regular season game against USD in the program's inaugural season, dropping an 80-56 decision on Nov. 11, 2011. The following year, CSUSM went back to the JC Pavilion and fell 69-44, but this time the game was counted as an exhibition. The Toreros are picked to finish third in the West Coast Conference Preseason Poll, behind Gonzaga and BYU.

Last Game Recap
The Cougars collected their first victory of 2014-15 season after registering a 65-56 win over La Sierra in their home opener. Four Cougars recorded double-digits with senior Heather Thompson leading the way with 14 points and freshman Kylie Coppi chipping in 12 points. Senior Mackenzie Harnett was a rebound short of a double-double, tallying 11 points and nine boards. Senior Cassie Damyanovich added 11 points while classmate Alex Alvarado dished out five assists.
 
Defending the Boards
The Cougars concluded their 2013-14 season ranked No. 5 in defensive rebounds per game, averaging 31.3 in their 33 games. After two games, CSUSM is ranked No. 33 with a 30.0 average. Don't count the Cougars out for they will be moving up in this category with the return of seniors Heather Thompson, Mackenzie Harnett and sophomore Brianna Higgins.
