Cougars Can’t Overcome Hot TMC Shooting

Box Score OCEANSIDE, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team could not withstand a strong shooting night by the The Master's College in an 89-60 loss on Saturday night at Bross Gym.

CSUSM drops to 7-12 overall.

Cassie Damyanovich made six of her 12 attempts to lead the Cougars with 15 points. Freshman Nicole Lierly scored 11 points in a career-high 18 minutes of work.

First-year guard Lindsay Uyematsu had nine points and three assists. She played a game-high 31 minutes and was efficient with the ball, tallying an assist and three steals while turning it over just twice.

TMC (11-3) scored the game's first 12 points and never looked back, shooting 55.7 percent from the field to hand the Cougars their third straight loss.

CSUSM was able to cut a 19-point first-half deficit to eight with a 10-2 run late in the first half.

Damyanovich hit back-to-back jumpers before Heather Thompson's fade-away made it 38-30.

TMC was able to increase its 12-point halftime lead to 20 with 12 minutes to go.

Lierly converted a 3-point play with a lay-up and a free throw before her 3-pointer the next trip down the floor brought the Cougars within 16, 66-50, with 10:47 remaining.

But it would be as close the Cougars would come, as TMC traded buckets down the stretch to keep the contest out of reach.

CSUSM outrebounded TMC, 39-37, but the Mustangs outscored the Cougars 36-16 in the paint. Jacquelyn Marshall and Nicole Nitake had 15 points apiece.

After the three straight road games, the Cougars will be at home for two games next week.

CSUSM takes on Biola on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m. The Cougars will then welcome San Diego Christian on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m.
