Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Sherika Miller scored 23 points and
Kimberly Kipp contributed 18 off the bench as the Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team pulled away in the second half to take a 79-58 at La Sierra on Thursday night at LSU Gym.
Miller led all scorers, but Kipp proved lethal in the contest, going 8-of-8 from the floor while grabbing eight rebounds and blocking three shots.
The Cougars improve to 9-15 overall while LSU drops to 11-13. The victory snaps a three-game skid for CSUSM.
The game stayed close over the first 10 minutes, but the Kipp hit back-to-back layups that sparked a 10-2 spurt. CSUSM led 27-18 at the 7:19 mark.
A bucket and a pair of free throws from Miller helped keep LSU from severely cutting into the lead, and the Cougars took a 35-27 lead into the break.
The Golden Eagles got within two early on in the second stanza, but once again the Cougars had an answer. Miller hit a pair of free throws before Alexandria's jumper made it 44-38.
Lindsay Uyematsu's bucket made the lead 10, 50-40, with 11:38 to play.
Consecutive baskets from
Nicole Lierly extended the lead to 15 five minutes later.
LSU was only able to get within 13 the rest of the way and Lierly extinguished any doubt by hitting a 3-pointer that put CSUSM up 75-54 with 1:25 on the clock. Lierly had another productive game in a reserve role, tallying 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting.
The Cougars will be back at home next Wednesday, Feb. 5 against Point Loma Nazarene. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m., different from the usual time of 7:30 p.m.
