DAZZLING DEBUT
CSUSM defeated Caltech 5-0 in the season opener on Saturday in Pasadena. The Cougars took a 1-0 lead into halftime before exploding for four goals in the second half. Diego Fontes scored twice and Jacob Stolmeier added a goal in their respective debuts, while Luka Stevanovic scored his first goal as a Cougar and Alex Jaziri added another. The win marked CSUSM's first victory in the first game of a season since 2008. (CSUSM beat Vanguard 1-0 in 2011, but it was via a forfeit). Fontes was named CSUSM Male Athlete of the Week after his performance.
Â
BIG TIME WIN
The Cougars' five-goal victory is tied for the third-biggest win in program history. Interestingly, the Cougars have won by five goals three times – all against Caltech. CSUSM took down Caltech 6-1 in 2006, 5-0 in 2011 and 5-0 once again last Saturday. CSUSM's record for win margin is seven goals, set in a 7-0 win over San Diego Christian on Sept. 7, 2006.
HOPE INTERNATIONAL PREVIEW
The Royals enter Wednesday's contest at 2-2 overall after winning back-to-back games against William Jessup and Pacific Union over the Labor Day break. HIU outscored its opponents 9-2 in the process, including a 4-0 shutout of PUC on Monday afternoon. Angel Ayala leads the team with a pair of goals and an assist on the season. CSUSM is 3-0 all-time against HIU and has never surrendered a goal. The Cougars last beat the Royals, 1-0, on Sept. 13, 2011, on a goal by Ryan VanDenburg.
SOKA UNIVERSITY
CSUSM heads up Interstate 5 on Saturday to play Soka University. The Cougars are 4-0-1 all-time against the Eagles. When Soka came to town in 2012, the Cougars downed the Eagles 2-0 behind goals from Ryan VanDenburg and Scott Rice. Zach Sheppard made four saves and recorded a shutout in his first career start.
