SALEM, Ore. – The third-ranked Cal State San Marcos men's golf team posted 11-over 299 in the first round of the NAIA Men's Golf National Championships on Tuesday at Creekside Golf Club.
The Cougars are currently tied for ninth along with Wayland Baptist (Texas). Defending national champion Oklahoma City is the early leader at 8-under 280. All four scorers for OCU posted par or better, led by Anthony Marchesani's 68 (-4).
Senior
Adam Loran led all Cougars with a 2-under 70, while freshman
Scott Shefflette shot 75, 3-over. Senior
Steven Gouirand and freshman
Ryan Odom both carded 5-over 77's.
Brian Walker's 90 was thrown out.
Loran went out with a 34 on the front side and birdied two of his first three holes on the back to get to 4-under. He suffered his first bogey of the day on 13, but answered with his fifth birdie to get back to -4. However, he bogeyed two of the last three holes to finish at -2. He is tied for fourth in the individual standings.
Shefflette got out to a rough start on the front side, suffering a pair of double-bogeys on long par-4's to play the front nine +4. He didn't record a bogey on the backside though, birdieing the par-5 16
th to finish at +3.
Gouirand played the front side at 1-under, but bogeyed 10 and 11 to jump back up to +1. After dropping another stroke, Gouirand tripled the par-4 18
th to finish with a 77.
Odom shot 40 on the front, but played his first seven holes of the back 1-under-par. Heading to 17 at +3, Odom bogeyed the final two holes for a 77.
CSUSM starts its second round on the 10
th hole tomorrow, Wednesday, at noon.
