SAN DIEGO, Calif.—Competing in his first decathlon as a Cougar,
Brent Ruth came back to win the Point Loma Collegiate Invitational Decathlon, outrunning his closest competitor in the tenth and final event— the 1500m.
Ruth entered the day in third place, but put together his highest point total in any of the events in the 110 hurdles, scoring 749 by running 15.86— the fastest time of all individuals competing.
He proceeded to score 400 points in the discus (26.71m), 381 in the pole vault (3.10m), and 448 in the javelin throw, giving him 5,127 points total after nine events.
Stephen Sousa, an unattached competitor held a slim lead with 5,160 points entering the grueling 1500m finale, so Ruth knew he had to beat Sousa by at least six seconds to win the competition.
He did just that, running 5:10.13 to Sousa's 5:24.28, winning the decathlon and hitting the NAIA “A” standard for the event. His mark currently ranks as the fourth best in the NAIA this season.
Bryan ten Bosch finished seventh in the competition with 4,420 points, narrowly missing the “A” standard of 4500 points.
On the women's side in the heptathlon,
Savanna Holmen finished fifth in the heptathlon, scoring 3733 points and hitting the NAIA “A” Standard of 3,700 points.
Holmen scored 482 points with her leap of 4.71m in the long jump and 312 points with her throw of 21.23m in the javelin before closing out the day with 533 points with her time of 2:43.56 in the 800m.
