No. 4 CSUSM Tied for Third After Two Rounds of Battle at Primm

The Cougars shot their third-lowest score of the season in the opening round.

Day 1 Results

PRIMM, Nev. – The No. 4 Cal State San Marcos men's golf team is tied for third place (out of 17 teams) after two rounds of the Battle at Primm at Primm Valley Golf Club.

The Cougars, who finished with a total of 6-under-par 570, trails leader No. 11 The Master's College by three strokes (567, -9). No. 19 Grand View (Iowa) is in second at 8-under-par 568. No. 7 Johnson & Wales (Fla.) is tied with CSUSM at 570.

CSUSM opened the day with a 6-under-par total of 282 before posting even-par 288 in the afternoon session. All five Cougars shot 73 (+1) or better in round two. Their first-round score of 282 was their third-lowest round of the year and best since shooting 7-under-par 281 in the final round of the Northwood Invitational.

Freshman Ryan Odom leads all Cougars at 5-under-par 139 after a 69 (-3) in the opening round and a 70 (-2) in round two. He is tied for third overall along with Trey Pfund (Marian), Colin Brennan (JWU) and Darryn Els (Wayland Baptist).

Senior Adam Loran fired a season-best 5-under-par 67 before finishing the day with a 1-over-par 73. He is tied for seventh at 4-under-par 140 with three others.

Junior Steven Gouirand sits tied for 18th at even-par 144 after a 71 (-1) and a 73 (+1).

Freshman Scott Shefflette followed a 3-over-par 75 with an even-par 72 to tally 147 (+3). Senior Randy Hensley shot 73 (+1) after a first-round 76 (+4).

No. 2 Oklahoma City and No. 13 Wayland Baptist (Texas) are one stroke behind CSUSM and JWU at 5-under-par 571. No. 5 Bellevue (Neb.) is the only remaining team under par at 2-under 574.

Anthony Marchesani of OCU is the current leader at 11-under-par 133 (66-67). Davis Garner of Bellevue shot 7-under-par 137 (67-70) and is in second place.

The final round at the par-72, 7,131-yard track will be played Tuesday.
