Robert Morris (Ill.) Ends CSUSM’s A.I.I. Tournament Run

Box Score MONTGOMERY, W.Va. – Danielle Cooper recorded 14 points and a game-high 17 rebounds, but the fourth-seeded Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team was eliminated from the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Tournament by top-seeded Robert Morris, 65-62, on Saturday afternoon at Neal Baisi Athletic Center on the campus of West Virginia Tech.

UPDATE: Sarah Jackson was named to the All-A.I.I. Tournament Team, it was announced Sunday by the conference.

CSUSM (13-19) led by as much as 13 with 10:41 remaining in the second half,  but RMU (18-12) used a 12-2 run to pull even at 57-57 with four minutes remaining. Sherika Miller's layup handed the Cougars a 61-60 advantage at the 2:46 mark, but it would be the last field goal CSUSM would be able to convert the rest of the way.

Ashley Segers' jumper pulled the Eagles even at 62-62 at the 1:14 mark before Segers added a free throw to make it 63-62 with 19 seconds left.

The Cougars had a possession to retake the lead, but the Eagles forced a turnover before Danish Cole gave RMU a three-point lead on a pair of free throws with five seconds left.

Cassie Damyanovich's 3-point jumper was off the mark as time expired.

RMU advances to the A.I.I. title game with an automatic berth to the NAIA National Tournament on the line.

The loss likely ends the Cougars' season, however, there is always the outside possibility that the NAIA tournament committee may grant CSUSM an at-large selection.

Damyanovich finished with 12 points while Sarah Jackson added 10 points and seven assists. Alexandria Alvarado dished out five assists.

RMU scored 25 points of 34 CSUSM turnovers.

The Cougars defeated No. 5-seed Morris College (S.C.) in the A.I.I. quarterfinals, 86-50, on Friday evening.
