Box Score OCEANSIDE, Calif. – Sarah Jackson scored 13 points in her final home game and the Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team held off New Hope Christian, 64-57, on Saturday night at MiraCosta College.
Jackson, who was honored along with fellow senior
Mechel'la Logan before the contest tipped-off, went 4-of-9 from the field and pulled down six boards as the Cougars improved to 11-17 overall. Logan added 12 points along with
Cassie Damyanovich.
NHC dropped to 11-15.
The Deacons took an early five-point lead, but Jackson helped the Cougars pull close with three jumpers on consecutive possessions to bring CSUSM within 13-12.
Sherika Miller and
Alexandria Alvarado followed with baskets and the Cougars expanded their first lead to 17-13 with 9:59 remaining.
Leading by three, the Cougars put together an 11-0 run over the last 5:46 of the first half to take a 38-24 advantage into the break.
The lead stayed in double digits for much of the second half, but an 8-0 spurt brought the Deacons within 55-49 with 4:59 left.
Heather Thompson iced the run with a jumper from the free throw line and the Cougars took an eight-point lead with 2:45 remaining.
NHC edged within five with 50 seconds left when Deanna Tupai was fouled on a successful layup, but Tupai could not convert the 3-point play. Jackson was fouled on the ensuing possession before making 1-of-2 from the line.
Lei Lolohea's 3-pointer with 24 seconds left to make it a one-possession game missed badly and Jackson iced the game with a final free throw with 11 seconds left.
The Cougars finish their home slate 6-5 overall at MiraCosta College.
CSUSM returns to action on Thursday night at Vanguard at 7:30 p.m. The Cougars' final game of the season is Feb. 16 at UC Santa Cruz.
