Box Score VALLEJO, Calif. – Cassie Damyanovich tied a school record with 31 points, but Menlo College pulled away late to hand the Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team a 65-58 loss on Friday night at the Cal Maritime Classic.
The Cougars trailed for much of the second half, but a 3-point play from
Heather Thompson gave the Cougars a one-point lead with under five minutes remaining.
The teams traded buckets until a friendly bounce on a 3-pointer by Jolise Limcaco gave Menlo (7-3) a 58-56 lead with 1:44 left.
The Cougars' next two trips down the floor were unfruitful. The Oaks took advantage and Limcaco capped off an 8-0 run with a tough left-handed layup.
Down 62-56 with under a minute remaining, Damyanovich hit a jumper to keep the Cougars within reach. However, Menlo was sharp from the free throw line the rest of the way.
Damyanovich went 14-of-24 (.583) from the field. Her 14 makes are a new program record.
She matched
Danielle Cooper for the program scoring record. Cooper had 31 points in CSUSM's 2012-13 season opener at Fresno Pacific on Nov. 2, 2012. They are the only two CSUSM players to score more than 30 points in a single game.
Damyanovich previously had the program's second-highest scoring output, a feat she accomplished twice (Nov. 23, 2013 at Pacific Union; Dec. 14, 2012 vs. Ashford).
Thompson finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Melaya Gaines showed her presence inside, registering nine points on 4-of-6 shooting six rebounds and a pair of blocks.
MacKenzie Harnett joined Gaines and Damyanovich with multiple blocks in the contest.
The Cougars take on host Cal Maritime (4-5) Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
