Toros Too Much for Cougars in Los Angeles

Box Score LOS ANGELES – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team took on its second NCAA Division II opponent in as many days, falling 77-47 to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday at the CSULA Thanksgiving Classic.

Cassie Damyanovich scored 13, Alexandria Alvarado tallied 12 and Sherika Miller added 10 as the Cougars moved to an even 5-5 on the season. Despite dropping back-to-back games over the Thanksgiving weekend, the Cougars are .500 through their first 10 games for the first time in the program's three-year history.

CSUDH improved to 2-1 overall with a strong performance inside. The Toros outscored the Cougars 50-18 in the paint and turned 21 offensive rebounds into 22 second-chance points. In addition, CSUDH racked up 11 steals and forced 18 Cougar turnovers.

Damyanovich gave the Cougars a quick 2-0 lead, but a 13-2 run gave CSUDH a comfortable margin to work with early in the game. The Cougars fought back to within seven, but the Toros would keep a double-figure lead for the majority of the half and take a 19-point advantage into the break, 45-26.

Miller's jumper and a layup by Heather Thompson on the first two CSUSM possessions of the second stanza brought the Cougars within 16, 46-30. However, the Cougars couldn't nudge any closer.

The teams traded baskets before a 19-4 run saw CSUDH take a 33-point advantage with 3:50 remaining.

CSUSM will head to El Cajon on Tuesday evening to face San Diego Christian at 5:30 p.m.

The Cougars will then play Menlo and Cal Maritime on Friday and Saturday, respectively, at the Cal Maritime Classic.
