Box Score REDDING, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team won its third game in a row, 63-59, over Corban (Ore.) on Sunday evening at the TCSA/DAP Hoops Classic on the campus of Simpson University.
CSUSM (5-3) led by as many as nine in the second half before holding off a couple of late charges by the Warriors.
Sherika Miller paced the Cougars with 15 points, while
Heather Thompson tallied 14 and
Lindsay Uyematsu recorded 11. Thompson and Miller both shot 50% from the field.
Kimberly Kipp pulled down 10 rebounds, six on the offensive end.
Leading by one with 12:07 remaining, 38-37, the Cougars rattled off a 10-2 run that saw CSUSM take a nine-point lead on a layup by
Melaya Gaines at the 8:08 mark.
After Corban (2-3) cut the deficit to three, Thompson and Miller connected with jumpers to push the lead back to eight at the 4:44 mark.
Sadie Plegeram's jumper made the score 57-53 with 2:46 left, but it would be the last field goal surrendered by the Cougars the rest of the way.
Still, Corban nudged within four at the 1:27 mark, 60-56.
Alexandria Alvarado missed a pair of free throws to extend CSUSM's lead, but Thompson came down with a huge offensive rebound before tossing it back up and in to make it 62-56.
Pilgeram's free throw brought the Warriors within five with 51 seconds remaining, but CSUSM drained the clock on its next trip down the floor, giving the ball back with just 12 seconds left. Julia Young hit a pair of free throws to make it 62-59, but Alvarado iced the game with a free throw with eight seconds remaining.
CSUSM returns to the hardwood on Friday and Saturday, November 29 and 30, when it takes on Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills, respectively, at the CSULA Thanksgiving Classic.
