Box Score LEWISTON, Idaho – Cassie Damyanovich finished with a game-high 22 points and the Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team cruised to a 79-64 victory over Warner Pacific (Ore.) in the Cougars' opening game of the Twin Rivers Physical Therapy Classic on Friday night.
Damyanovich went 8-of-13 from the field and hit six of her nine 3-point attempts to lift the Cougars to 2-1 on the season. Warner Pacific dropped to 2-3 overall.
CSUSM followed Damyanovich's example from behind the arc, shooting 42.1% (8-of-19) from long range in the 15-point victory.
Nicole Lierly was 2-of-3 on 3-pointers and registered a career-high 12 points.
Sherika Miller added 10 and a game-high five assists.
Lindsay Uyematsu contributed 11 points, all from the free-throw line.
Heather Thompson corralled a game-high 14 rebounds while
Melaya Gaines pulled down 11 boards.
The Cougars led by 15 midway through the first half. Warner Pacific cut the lead to 10 with two minutes to play, but CSUSM responded with an 11-0 run to take a 21-point lead, 49-28, at the break.
A pair of free throws by Gaines handed CSUSM its biggest lead of the game at the 15:14 mark, 58-33, allowing the Cougars to insert some of their less-experienced personnel the rest of the way.
WPU chopped the Cougars' lead down to eight with 1:33 remaining, but CSUSM went 7-of-8 from the stripe down the stretch to seal the win.
CSUSM turns around to play Southern Oregon on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The Cougars will end the Classic on Sunday against host Lewis-Clark State at 2:00 p.m.
