Clean Sweep: Cougars Run Away with CSUSM Fall Classic

Final Results

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – A year after missing out on the CSUSM Fall Classic individual title in a tiebreaker, sophomore Alyssa Waite finally captured her first collegiate tournament outright.

The El Camino High School alum, who had twice finished runner up via-card off in both of the Cal State San Marcos women's golf team's home tournaments in 2012-13, finished with a two-round total of 7-over 151 (74-77-151), two strokes ahead of teammate Christina Trujillo (75-78-153, +9).

CSUSM accounted for the top six players in the field. Vanessa Chap (75-80-155, +11) and Victoria Smith (77-78-155, +11) were tied for third at 11-over, and Taylor Coover (79-81-159, +15) and Lisa Copeland (79-81-160, +16) followed.

Chap officially took third place via card-off with Smith by shooting lower on Tuesday's back nine.

CSUSM posted the lowest team total for the second day in a row, pairing a final round 314 (+26) with a 305 (+17) for a total of 43-over 619.  Embry-Riddle (320-338-658, +82) was runner-up, 39 strokes behind the Cougars.

The CSUSM "B" squad stepped up its game as well, finishing in third place at 94-over (341-329) 670. In the top-10 along with Trujillo was Cassie Stevenson, who went 83-81 to place eighth at 20-over 164.

Gianna Trzesniewski improved eight strokes from her first round, carding a 12-over 84 and finishing 17h. Coby Kooyman (91-86-177) and Danielle Biss (92-90-182) finished 18th and 21st respectively.

The Cougars head into the winter break with two tournament wins under their belts and a sense of optimism ahead of the spring season. Coover won the Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) Fall Invite on Oct. 1 and Trujillo has made a case to be in the CSUSM top five with back-to-back top-10 finishes in the team's final two tournaments of the year.

Cindy Naval's troops will see where they stand in the national ranks with the NAIA preseason coaches' poll is released on Nov. 8.
