Year 3
CSUSM women's basketball enters its third season as a program. The Cougars are 31-34 overall through their first two seasons. After winning the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Division II championship in 2011-12, the Cougars went 13-19 in 2012-13, winning a game in the A.I.I. Conference Tournament before being eliminated in the semifinals. Six players have been named all-conference under Coach Jennum's watch.
New Year, New Look
The Cougars underwent a serious makeover after a 2012-13's 13-19 campaign, welcoming 10 new faces and returning just five players from last year's ranks.
Brianna Higgins, a transfer from the University of Hawaii, and freshman
Melaya Gaines, a two–time all league selection at Armijo High School, will contribute on the inside for CSUSM. Freshmen
Lindsay Uyematsu and
Nicole Lierly add depth to the Cougar backcourt.
Senior Stateswoman
2013 All-A.I.I. First Teamer
Sherika Miller will be the lone senior on this season's roster. Miller, a transfer from San Francisco State who played her high school ball in Santee, started 28 of 32 games and led the Cougars with 10.6 points per game. She finished in double digits 21 times and scored a season-high 23 against Menlo on Dec. 1, 2012. She also averaged 4.3 boards.
Also Returning…
Alexandria Alvarado and
Cassie Damyanovich are back in the Cougar backcourt for their junior seasons. Alvarado started 26 games a year ago, tallying 64 assists and 45 steals. Damyanovich finished last season on a tear, scoring in double digits in five of the last six games. She scored 26 points in a win over Ashford and had 25 on 9-of-14 shooting against Concordia (Calif.). Escondido High School graduate
Heather Thompson is also back for her junior year and will look to add to her 7.9 PPG and 8.2 RPG.
MacK is Back
The Cougars have a key piece returning to their system in
MacKenzie Harnett. Harnett averaged seven points per game and started the first five games of the season at small forward before a knee injury ended her year prematurely. She played in all 33 games during her freshman season in 2011-12, averaging 3.9 PPG and 3.7 RPG. Harnett will add much-needed size inside for CSUSM.
William Jessup Preview
Saturday's contest will be the second in as many nights for WJU, which opens its season on Friday night at San Diego Christian. The Warriors, out of the California Pacific Conference, went 15-15 last season. CSUSM topped WJU on the road last year,
67-42, behind 12 points from Miller and 11 from Harnett. Two of WJU's top three leading scorers, Ashley Rose (16.5 PPG) and Taylor Borba (13.8 PPG), return to the Warrior backcourt for their senior years.
