CSUSM Holds Off Simpson to Snap Skid

Box Score OCEANSIDE, Calif. – Heather Thompson registered a double-double and the Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team held off Simpson University's (Calif.) late rally to earn its first win since Dec. 18 with a 76-73 victory over the Red Hawks on Thursday night at MiraCosta College.

Down 74-72 with four seconds left, Simpson's Nichole Jones had an opportunity to tie the game, but was only able to make 1-of-2 from the stripe. CSUSM freshman guard Jessica Harris was fouled immediately and proceeded to convert both of her free throws to ice the game with 1.8 seconds remaining.

With the win, CSUSM (9-14) snaps a five-game losing streak while avenging its one-point loss to the Red Hawks on Nov. 3o in Redding, Calif. Simpson drops to 4-12 overall.

Thompson recorded a double-double by halftime before finishing with 24 points and 16 rebounds. She was 12-of-16 from the field, pulled down six offensive boards and played a primary role in CSUSM outscoring SU 22-8 in the paint.

Sherika Miller and Harris totaled 15 and 12 points, respectively, while senior guard Sarah Jackson tallied seven points to go with five assists and a program-record eight steals. Alexandria Alvarado added six assists, and Harris pitched in with five, as the Cougars dished out 23 assists to just 10 for the Red Hawks.

The Cougars will play their third game in as many days tomorrow against Biola at 5:30 p.m. in La Mirada.
