Box Score OCEANSIDE, Calif. – Sherika Miller registered game highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds, but the Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team fell to No. 13 The Master's College 52-46 on Wednesday night at MiraCosta College.
CSUSM (8-14) raced out to an 21-9 lead early in the first half, but TMC (12-0) rallied to get within three at the break before holding the Cougars to just 35.5% shooting in the second frame to stay undefeated.
The Cougars held TMC without a point for over six minutes in the first half, taking a 12-point lead with 6:10 remaining on a 9-0 run capped by
Cassie Damyanovich's 3-pointer. However, it would be the final points of the stanza for CSUSM, as the Mustangs crawled back to make it 21-18 at half, despite a 6-of-31 (19.4%) clip from the field.
Jessica Harris snapped CSUSM's cold streak with a three on the Cougars' opening possession, but Zoe Scott answered with a three after Theresa Brown's layup to bring TMC within one. Two minutes later, Whitney Best hit a three from the right side to hand the Mustangs their first lead, 30-28, since leading 3-2 with 18:37 remaining in the first half.
Miller's fast break layup helped CSUSM retake the lead, 34-33, but TMC answered with a 6-0 stretch to take a five-point advantage with 9:29 left. Down 46-38, Miller converted another layup off a feed from
Sarah Jackson before
Heather Thompson made a layup and drew a foul to make it 46-42 with 2:13 left. Unfortunately, the free throw was unsuccessful in making the contest a one-possession game.
Needing a stop, the Cougars looked as though they would get their wish as they forced the Mustangs to call timeout with three seconds left on the shot clock. However, Jacquelyn Marshall provided the dagger, hitting a tough turnaround jumper from the left elbow to make it 48-42 at the 1:44 mark.
Sarah Jackson added eight points, five boards and three assists in a gutsy performance that saw her return late in the second half after severely jamming a finger. Her dribble drive brought the Cougars within six with 23 seconds left and she added another tough runner in the lane to make it 51-46 with 11 seconds remaining.
Brown led the Mustangs with 13 points while Best totaled 10 points and four assists.
CSUSM turns around to face Simpson University (Calif.) Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at MiraCosta College.
