CSUSM Finishes Seventh at U.C. Ferguson Classic

Results

OKLAHOMA CITY – Cal State San Marcos shot 284 (+2) as a team during the final round of the U.C. Ferguson Classic to finish seventh overall at the event hosted by Oklahoma City University. CSUSM finished with a three-round total of 849 (-3).

Scott Shefflette led all Cougars with a two-under 69 in the third round of the event on the 6,576-yard track at Lincoln Golf Course. His rounds of 66-69-69 (-9) put him in a tie for fifth place. Moreover, he placed higher than nine All-Americans in his first collegiate event.

"Wow! I knew Scott was good, but he has the ability to be great. Shooting –9 under in his first college event is awesome, but it could have been lower," said CSUSM head coach Greg Hutton. "He had a stretch of three bad holes in his second round that led to [three] double bogeys. I think we could see Scott take it low at some point this season."

Steven Gouirand was the only other Cougar to finish in red numbers on Tuesday, posting 70 to finish at 215 (+2). Ryan Odom shot 74 in his final round to match Gouirand at 215 (+2).

Adam Loran finished a stroke behind Gouirand and Odom at 216 after going 70-72-74.

"This week was a good learning experience for the Cougars. My goal was to put these guys to the test from day one. They needed to see that there are some really great teams out there that compete at a higher level than what we are used to seeing in California. We competed against the best teams in the country and are ready to get to work," said Hutton.

As a team, CSUSM racked-up the third-most amount of birdies (58) during the tournament and was a combined 21-under on par 5's.

Bellevue University (-33) finished seven strokes ahead of national runner-up Oklahoma Christian (-26) to take the tournament title. Defending national champion Oklahoma City finished -20.
