The Cal State San Marcos Women's Basketball team concluded a fine debut season with a loss to #4 ranked Davenport (MI) in the opening round of the NAIA National Tournament, falling 84-63 in Sioux City, IA Wednesday afternoon.
Entering the game having won 7 of their last 8 games- including the A.I.I. Conference Championship- the Cougars were excited to face the #1 seed in their bracket and got off to a quick start early.
CSUSM led 11-7 after Michel'la Logan drained a 3-pointer with 14 minutes left to play in the first half, but a string of free throws brought the Lady Panthers right back. The Cougars regained the lead 13-12 after a fast-break layup by MacKensie Harnett, but trailed the remainder of the game after that.
San Marcos entered the locker rooms at halftime with a 39-27 deficit, but climbed back to as close as 7 points in the second half, and were down just 60-52 with 9:02 left to play. The comeback was not to be, however, and the Cougars finished their debut season with an 18-15 record.
Point Guard
Sidney Dobner scored a team-high 13 points along with her 5 rebounds and 3 assists, while Michel'la Logan (5-of-6 FG) added 11 points off the bench.
Sarah Jackson and Gabriel Munsch recorded a team-high 6 rebounds apiece.
The future is bright for the first-year Cougars, who will miss senior
Justine Chacon (9 points, 3 rebounds) next year but will return 4 starters from this year's squad. San Marcos persevered despite having the 2
nd toughest schedule in all the NAIA, and emerged as a top-level NAIA team en route to winning an A.I.I. Conference Championship.
